General Electric Technical Leader for Materials Engineering in Wilmington, North Carolina

Role Summary:The Materials Engineering team is responsible for development and performance of materials for both plant and fuel applications. This includes developing new material technology, characterizing material behavior and performing design analyses. The Tech Leader role requires work planning and work oversight, technical problem solving and communication and collaboration with other teams within both GEH and GNF businesses and functions.

Essential Responsibilities:The Technical Leader for Materials Engineering is responsible for the delivery of high-quality engineering products by the Materials Engineering team. Essential responsibilities include the following:

  • Articulate the work plan the team will use to address the technical work scope requested

  • Work with project managers to develop and maintain good project schedules

  • Work with other engineering leaders to advance fuel technology and designs

  • Work with engineering leaders to ensure that material applications within products and services provided by GNF/GEH are appropriate for use within the intended design and within governing regulatory requirements

  • Meet customer commitments and drive continuous improvement

  • Represent GNF/GEH to customers, nuclear regulators and at industry meetings such as conferences

  • Manage condition reports in the teams as part of the corrective action system

  • Conduct and participate in design reviews

  • Train and mentor engineers

  • Effectively manage multiple priorities

  • Maintain technical specifications and procedures

  • Foster integrity, safety, and quality as the most important priorities


  • Bachelor’s Degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or University;

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in a technology or engineering role

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master’s Degree or greater in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or University

  • Nuclear Industry knowledge / experience

  • Strong knowledge of fundamental material science principles, BWR core/fuel material behavior, and mechanical design fundamentals

  • Strong communication and writing skills and capable of articulating specific technical topics or assignments

  • Strong facilitation, team building, communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of project management.

  • Knowledge of quality standards and systems (e.g., NQA-1 and ISO 9000)

  • Strong analytical capabilities, problem solving and process skills

  • Honest and straightforward with a high level of personal integrity.

  • Detail-oriented and accountable for results.

  • Ability to work effectively within a highly collaborative environment

  • A self-starter willing to take initiative
