Job Description Summary

The Civil / Structural Engineer will serve as Subject Matter Expert for design, analysis, qualification and licensing of complex structures and structural modules pertaining to Nuclear Island and Turbine Island structures of a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Nuclear Power Plant.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Senior Civil/Structural engineer with expertise in design, construction and modularization of Nuclear Island and Turbine Island structures and structural components. This role contributes to the overall strategy and manages complex issues within design, analyses, construction and modularization of Nuclear Island Structures. The candidate must demonstrate strong, working knowledge of static and dynamic analyses, including reinforced concrete design, structural steel design, and composite structure design. Provides key Civil/Structural Engineering technical direction in the delivery of New nuclear power plant (NPP) projects with substantial business impact.

  • Serves as the Subject Matter Expert, with proficiency in US-NRC Regulatory Guides, Standard Review Plans, Building Codes and Standards (ASCE 4, ASCE 43, ACI 318, ACI 349, AISC N690, ASME Section III Division 2 (ACI 359), ASCE 7, and IBC).

  • Executes the design/ analysis of Seismic Category I and Seismic Category II structures in accordance with ASME B&PV Section III Division 2, AISC N690 code, and ACI 349 code nuclear structures.

  • Performs linear/non-linear Static and Dynamic analysis of complex NI and Containment structures for reinforced concrete and steel framed structures for seismic, hydrodynamic, thermal, missile, wind and tornado loads using ANSYS or NASTRAN computer codes.

  • Capability to perform design evaluations and constructability reviews of First-of-a Kind Engineering (FOAKE) of large-scale structures and their connections to meet.

  • Performs evaluation of design constructability of large-scale structures and their connections.

  • Effectively interfaces, communicates and provides technical recommendations and strategy through the analysis, preparation and presentation of technical data to internal and external GE customers and regulators using reports, records, and letters.

  • Developing specialized knowledge in their discipline. Serves as best practice/quality resource. Has awareness of latest technical developments in own area. Contributes towards strategy and policy development, and ensure delivery within area of responsibility.

  • Has in-depth knowledge of best practices and how own area integrates with others; has working knowledge of competition and the factors that differentiate them in the market

  • Uses judgment to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems in areas of operational/product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering. Takes new perspective on existing solutions. Uses technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations. Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own function to arrive at decisions.

  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements. Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to build consensus. Developing persuasion skills required to influence others on topics within field.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in an engineering capacity.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience of Nuclear Power Plant structural analysis, specifically Nuclear Island and Turbine Islandd structures.

  • Master's degree Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited university or college.

Desired Characteristics

  • In-depth knowledge of BWR plant systems

  • In-depth knowledge of development of engineering design modules pertaining to Nuclear Island structural components, including detailed evaluation of design constructability.

  • Capability to perform design evaluations and constructability reviews of First-of-a Kind Engineering (FOAKE) of large-scale structures and their connections to meet ASME, ACI and AWS requirements.
