Job Description Summary

Principal Software Architect to be part of the team supporting the design, build, delivery, and maintenance of software for Industrial Applications, Engineering Software, and Nuclear Fleet Services Software for the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor and existing BWR reactor designs.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Identify, evaluate and select appropriate technology, and develop/document design models

  • Design technical architectures for complex solutions

  • Identify, evaluate and select appropriate technology, and develop/document design models

  • Design, build, deliver and maintain software applications & services. Working in the areas of machine, cloud, platform and/or application.

  • Sets the direction of the development of strategy for software.

  • Propose most effective architectural solutions to meet cost, quality and schedule requirements.

  • Interprets simple internal and external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes or services.

  • Stays informed of industry trends that may inform work.

  • Uses high level of judgment to make decisions and handle complex tasks or problems in areas of operational, product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering.

  • Provide support in developing new product lines and upgrading existing products.

  • Coordinate with software development team in developing and implementing software applications.

  • May lead functional teams or projects with minimal resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity.

  • Mentor Junior Architects when required to ensure quality and productivity.

  • Attend industrial conferences, meetings, presentations to represent the company.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) from an accredited university or college and Minimum of 15 years of experience in Software Engineering

  • OR other Bachelor's Degree and Minimum of 25 years of experience in Software Engineering

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The location for this role is Wilmington, NC. However, hybrid work may be considered for highly qualified candidates.

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience with on premise and cloud-based architectures

  • Experience with high performance computing clusters and job scheduling

  • Experience with leading and\or influencing Software Development teams and strategy

  • Experience with HDF5 or similar data structures

  • Experience with industrial applications requiring high availability and utilizing technologies such as C/C++, Python, .NET Core, and Fortran

  • Experience with Hierarchical, Relational, and Non-relational, and Object-oriented databases

  • Real-time and/or embedded systems awareness

  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Broad technical interests such as networking protocols, software development methodology, electronics design, motion control, machine design, etc.

  • Aware of methods and practices such as Lean/Agile/XP, etc.

  • Prior work experience in an agile environment, or introductory training on Lean/Agile

  • Aware of and able to apply continuous integration (CI).

  • Experience using modern development tooling such as Git, GitHub, GitLab, etc. and testing frameworks

  • Experience in the Nuclear industry is preferred

  • General understanding of the impacts of technology choice to the software development life cycle

The salary range for this position is $142k - $213k. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus.
