General Electric Lead Mechanical Welding Engineer in Wilmington, North Carolina

Job Description Summary

In this role, the Lead Mechanical Welding Engineer, will develop design specifications, process specifications, create and mature design concepts, provide procurement support, and generate drawings and design documentation for welded products. This position requires interface with Business Project Managers and Technical Project Engineers, Sourcing and equipment manufacturers, and interfacing engineering teams with both our business and its partner.

  • Demonstrates accountability for cost, schedule, quality, and technical accuracy of assigned tasks.

  • Takes personal responsibility, understanding impact of design and associated risk. Considers customer needs and maintains open communication with interfacing engineers and project stakeholders.

  • In this role, the Engineer will develop design specifications, process specifications, create and mature design concepts, provide procurement support, and generate other drawings and design documentation as required for welded products. The Engineer will operate in a matrixed engineering team to ensure high quality deliverables in accordance with customer requirements, business procedures and regulatory agency guidelines.

  • Execute the analysis, design, test, or integration required to define and support assignments related to nuclear components that meet business standards and program / product requirements

  • Performance of fundamental engineering hand calculations and modeling

  • Developing design of weldedcomponents and equipment

  • Perform metallurgical analysis of weldments. Familiar with the physical and welding metallurgy of austenitic stainless steels.

  • Familiar with GTAW and LBW processes

  • Able to assist engineers in weld joint design concepts and design for component producibility.

  • Maintaining focus to assessing causality and risk.

  • Preparing and presenting technical data to internal customers

  • Lead/facilitate discussion and information exchange to promote open dialogue including working effectively in a matrixed team environment

  • Ensuring that product designs meet all intended application and design requirements by working with experts in other functional teams

  • Provide technical support through Sourcing for fabricator assessment and interfaces.

  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology that provides a competitive advantage to the business

  • Participate and lead teams assigned to address specific organizational initiatives

Re q u i r e d Q u al i fi c a tions

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline from an accredited university or college.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in an engineering environment.

  • Relocation to Wilmington, NC

Des i r e d Ch a r a c t e ri s tics

  • Experience analyzing, and solving moderately complex design problems

  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to write organized engineering documents

  • Strong interpersonal and proven leadership skills

  • Knowledge of Geometric Design & Tolerancing practices

  • Familiar with the physical and welding metallurgy of nickel alloys, zirconium and aluminum alloys.

  • Familiar with SAW, FCAW, GMAW and SMAW processes.

  • Knowledge of the ASME/AWS codes

  • Experience in the BWR or PWR industry

The salary range for this position is $75k-115k. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus.
