General Electric Lead Mechanical Designer – Advanced Manufacturing in Wilmington, North Carolina
Job Description Summary
As a member of a cross functional team, the Lead Mechanical Designer is responsible for detailed mechanical design of fuel manufacturing equipment, including equipment models, drawings, and facility layouts for Natrium High Assay Low Enriched (HALEU) metallic nuclear fuel manufacturing. In this position, you will follow manufacturing equipment projects through design, procurement, assembly, testing, qualification and into production operation in a new HALEU fuel manufacturing facility. Design activities range from process specific processing tooling to integration of automated processing systems. Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, assembly, and product handling is required.
Roles and Responsibilities

Provide modeling and drafting support for the preparation of documentation for various advanced manufacturing engineering projects. Initial assignment will focus on the Natrium HALEU nuclear fuel manufacturing facility.
Create definitions of parts, modules, and assemblies in the form of 2D cross sections, 3D models, tolerance stack-ups, and various electronic data formats to support analysis, manufacturing, assembly, tooling, and inspection.
Develop manufacturing equipment, devices, systems and process design for new fuel fabrication facility including both mechanical and electrical/instrumentation aspects of equipment.
Perform design models, studies, layouts and similar engineering information using in-depth knowledge of facility, CAD models, drawings and similar inputs.
Produce drawing packages for equipment fabrication and facility construction.
Responsible for understanding Items Relied On For Safety (IROFS) and other safety controls for facility and equipment. Provide preliminary models and design information for facility criticality safety analysis and Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA).
Work closely with tooling and equipment fabricators to resolve problems and issues during equipment manufacturing.
Support interface and data, drawing or sketch needs for manufacturing, development, or equipment design activities.
Update facility and equipment data, work planning, or other data systems related to assigned projects.
Perform maintenance and administrative duties on electronic engineering documents, including processing drawings and process information into configuration management systems.
Utilizing CAD modeling and drawing system data, extract copies and selected views or sections of models or drawings and import to Microsoft Office software (Word, Powerpoint, etc) for use in design reviews, manuals, procedures or other documentation.
Effectively communicate and interface with engineers and other peers to complete assigned tasks.
Two-year Associate or Technical School degree in drafting, product design, engineering or equivalent discipline.
6 years of experience in process development and design of manufacturing and inspection systems and associated tooling
6 years of experience using design tools such as Autodesk (Inventor / AutoCAD / Vault) or equivalent
Ability to use computers. Frequent use of computer equipment.
Must be able to relocate to Wilmington, NC
4 year technical degree.
Strong mechanical aptitude and process engineering skills.
Experience with manufacturing and/or metal processing and handling. (Welding, Casting, Machining, Assembly, Extrusion, Transport, etc.)
Familiar with operation and application of industrial equipment and processes such as resistance welding, motors, valves, gears, mixing, heating, cooling, chemical reactions, furnaces, heat exchangers, hoods, vibrators, hydraulics etc.
Experience with manufacturing equipment design, and specification.
Experience with NRC Regulations, Process Safety Management (PSM), Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) or Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA).
Advanced mechanical/mechanism design experience
Ability to create details from 2D, and 3D AutoCAD, and Parametric Solid Inventor data bases
Proficiency in the following design tools: Autocad (2D), Inventor (3D), Visio (conceptual layout) and SIMIO (material flows)
Functional knowledge of ASME/ANSI 14.5M and other drafting standards
Understanding of manufacturing processes, fits, and fundamental principles of design
Experience dealing with equipment, machine and fabrication shops.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Self-starter with energy, positive “Can-Do” attitude
Proven track record of delivering on commitments in a fast paced and matrixed environment with multiple assignments and priorities
Proficiency with PC and productivity software [examples include MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint]
Lean Manufacturing and/or Six Sigma Certification
