General Electric Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - Fuel Design in Wilmington, North Carolina

Job Description Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer - Fuels will be responsible for the mechanical design, development, and analysis of nuclear fuel products. This role requires collaboration with sourcing, manufacturing, quality, thermal-mechanical analysts, material scientists, fuel experts, and nuclear/thermal-hydraulic analysis engineers to assure product performs within licensed and GNF performance expectations.

Job Description

  • Develop new products & design modifications to improve existing products

  • Understand the fabrication processes for component and assemblies, the post fabrication transportation and handling and the customer application requirements for fuel products and services

  • Prepare drawings and specifications for new and existing fuel designs

  • Provide well written, well organized documented engineering analyses to assure design adequacy

  • Perform design reviews and production readiness reviews

  • Address emergent customer and manufacturing issues

  • Work closely with sourcing and manufacturing to support cost reduction activities

  • Design test procedures and perform testing to address component and assembly adequacy

  • Develop procedures and work to improve engineering productivity

  • Present to internal/external customers and nuclear regulators

  • Assist and provide support to the team technical leader and functional manager to plan, status and execute projects

  • Perform work with high quality in accordance with NRC regulations, customer requirements, and business quality assurance standards

  • Effectively communicate and collaborate activities with other team members on technical issues

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or university

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a technology or engineering role

  • Minimum 3 years of expertise in mechanical design, drafting practices (GD&T and 3D CAD) and ASME code

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Relocation to Wilmington, NC is required once site reopens (site currently closed due to Covid-19).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or greater in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or University

  • Nuclear Industry knowledge / experience / ASME BPVC Section III

  • Demonstrated problem solving ability and ability to perform complex engineering analyses resulting in thorough and complete documentation

  • Strong communication skills and capable of articulating specific technical topics or assignments

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, vibration analysis, heat transfer, Finite Element Analysis, and statistics

  • Ability to work effectively within a highly collaborative environment

  • A self-starter willing to take initiative

The salary range for this position is $91k-125k. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location. In addition, this position is eligible for a performance bonus.
