Role Summary:

GE Transportation's Precision Dispatch System (PDS) is an advanced software solution that provides real-time train dispatching functions that direct and control the movement of trains over a railroad network. The PDS is a fault tolerant, highly available software product with applications running on a Linux based server with Windows based GUI clients.

Essential Responsibilities:

The Sr. Software Engineer will research, develop, and test software solutions spanning across the PDS software infrastructure. The software infrastructure includes the PDS C++ and JAVA Swing application code, relational database, real time Object database, Linux OS, Windows OS, messaging software, middleware software, and WebLogic/JBOSS applications.

Additionally, the Sr. Software Engineer will provide technical expertise across the PDS team and specific technical guidance and mentoring to development engineers.

In this role, you will:

  • Be a member of software team using Agile scrum or kanban methods in a fast paced, deadline driven organization

  • Provide technical leadership to immediate team as well as across wider organization

  • Design, develop and implement software solutions for PDS Infrastructure following established guidelines and quality standards

  • Collaborate and coordinate with other teams on PDS software infrastructure updates

  • Drive PDS vitality to ensure PDS COTS products are kept current.

  • Design and lead upgrades for major PDS COTS components and associated impacts to PDS application code

  • Evaluate PDS application code changes for adherence to coding standards, system performance, security and deployment impacts.

  • Significant participation in delivery of software updates to PDS system in production at customer sites

  • Provide real time troubleshooting and resolution to PDS system in production at customer site(s)

  • Contribute and support process improvements for development, deployment, sustaining & support activities of the PDS product both in development environment and production environment

  • Drive increased efficiency across the teams, eliminating duplication, leveraging product and technology reuse

  • Translate requirements/vision into a prioritized list of user stories, with Product Owner, and deliver the implementation to meet required timelines and quality standards

  • Understand performance parameters, as well as other non-functional requirements, assess application performance, and provide recommendations for improvement

  • Work with Product Line Leaders and Architects to develop multi-generation software technology plans

  • Communicate effectively both within the immediate team, across teams and with business leadership to align activities and deliverables

  • Proactively share information across the team, to the right audience with the appropriate level of detail and timeliness

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience

  • Must be willing to work at Melbourne, FL office
