Job Description Summary
The Senior Mechanical Architect will work in a cross-functional, global team that designs, develops, manufactures, and services complex state-of-the-art medical devices. The individual will complete detailed mechanical designs, from concept through implementation/release, inclusive of detailed analysis and testing. Specific tasks include 3D modeling, finite element simulation, design documentation, prototyping, reliability growth and demonstration, design verification/testing, and integration of hardware at all levels: from mechanical components to electronics packaging to entire system design. The Senior Mechanical Architect will also participate in and lead global Technical Design Reviews, craft product feature roadmaps, as well as mentor and guide junior engineers.
Engage in all phases of new product development; concept development/selection, documentation, design, prototype, test, supplier interaction, manufacturing introduction, and service support.
Develop component-level, assembly-level, and system-level mechanical designs for new or existing products according to established project timelines, product requirements, cost targets, and reliability goals.
Leverage knowledge in technical/functional areas and apply technical theory and practical experience to solve complex problems
Work from product specifications and requirements to develop component, assembly, and system geometry, specify materials, and establish acceptable performance standards
Prepare and present detailed design review packages demonstrating key performance, reliability, safety, and manufacturability goals are met and align with internal and external customer expectations
Perform complex calculations, analyses, and testing to verify requirements and assumptions.
Use CAD software to produce design artifacts; 3D models, 2D detailed drawings, thermal/structural analyses, tolerance stackups.
Direct the construction and testing of prototype and pilot products; conduct testing and analyze results.
Generate high-quality, accurate Bills of Materials and component/assembly specifications.
Create mechanical component designs and select the proper and cost-effective manufacturing technique; casting, thermoforming, injection molding, welding, machining, sheet-metal fab, additive-manufacturing, adhesives.
Deliver product designs with high rigor in areas of suspended mass, bolted joint design, manufacturability and serviceability.
Prepares engineering change requests, engineering change notices, bills of material, engineering specifications, supplier change requests, part obsolescence, and customer submittals.
Work independently and possess a high level of functional expertise necessary to influence and execute technical and project delivery.
The employee will also lead global Technical Design Reviews, craft product feature roadmaps
Mentor and support junior engineers; review design outputs for both accuracy and correctness including proper use of GD&T
Direct project workloads for drafters, designers, and junior engineers, as appropriate.
Assist Technical Service in troubleshooting field installations and service calls, when requested.
BS in Mechanical Engineering
Eight years of relevant experience in mechanical component and mechanical-system/assembly design. Relevant experience in structural engineering, analysis, and verification of mechanical structures, mechanisms, or electro/mechanical assemblies.
Demonstrated competence in the application of mechanical design principles, techniques, and best practices via completed product designs meeting functional, cost, and manufacturability/serviceability requirements
Complete knowledge of industry and/or academic practices and standards related to mechanical design principals, hardware selection/application, and mechanical system analysis (analysis, simulation, inspection, or test)
Excellent teamwork, project coordination, organization, and oral/written communication skills
Self-starter, energizing, results-oriented individual with ability to meet aggressive reliability, performance, cost, serviceability, and delivery targets
Master’s degree in mechanical engineering
Demonstrated technical leadership capability in integration activities
Cross-functional breadth of engineering experience in completing electro-mechanical system design from concept to production.
Experience with Weibull Analysis and DFR tools – HALT, HAST, Reliability Growth and Demonstration
Experience with Finite Element Analysis
Thermal and/or Structural simulation experience
Product development experience in a global engineering team, with global sources of material and supply chain
Experience with UL/ETL/IEC design standards and their application in a regulated Medical Equipment industry
