General Electric Lead Industrial Design in Waukesha, Wisconsin

Role Summary:The Lead Industrial Designer works in cross-functional development teams to optimize hardware, interaction, and services solutions by applying deep domain expertise in industrial design techniques and a strong awareness of gaining user needs through design research and an understanding of interaction design. They may be asked to guide less experienced industrial design staff members and may be assigned responsibilities up to and including the design direction for an entire product family.

Essential Responsibilities:In this role, you will:

  • Create Industrial Design against an established set of design language principles that ensure an extraordinary sensitivity to product aesthetics, ease-of-use, consistency, and product behaviors to create a world class GE Healthcare brand experience.

  • Proactively understanding the unmet needs of customers and end users by participating in formal design research activities with business partners and customers

  • Translate concepts and prototypes into final CAD design surfaces and final CMF (Color, Material, and Finish) specifications

  • Actively partner with UX Designers and UX design teams to incorporate digital interfaces within design concepts, all with an eye towards driving user delight, ease of use, safety, and UX/ID harmonization

  • Collaborate across relevant stakeholders to balance user, business, quality, and technical requirements and to ensure that design recommendations are incorporated within commercialized products

  • Work as part of a close-knit team and contribute to the continuous development of less experienced industrial design staff members.

  • Serve as a thought leader and consulting resource for industrial design techniques to the assigned product family or segment

Quality Specific Goals:

  1. Be aware of and comply with the GEHC Quality Manual, Quality Management System, Quality Management Policy, Quality Goals, and applicable laws and regulations as they apply to this job type/position

  2. Complete all planned Quality & Compliance training within the defined deadlines

  3. Identify and report any quality or compliance concerns and take immediate corrective action as required

  4. Knowledge and understanding of GEHC Design Controls Procedures in order to ensure that specified design requirements are met

Qualifications/Requirements:Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors/advanced degree in Industrial Design from a recognized institution

  • Minimum of 4 years of design experience

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job

  • Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a background investigation and drug screen

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Waukesha, WI

Desired Characteristics:Technical Expertise:

  • Detailed knowledge and highly proficient with CAD, as well as being able to perform design research and analysis

  • Demonstrated ability to independently draw conclusions from technical /research information

  • Ability to solve problems within highly constrained healthcare situations

  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

  • Ability to communicate in local language

  • Experience working with cross functional teams

  • Experience leading design reviews

  • Experience with proposal documentation and procedures

  • Ability to interact with vendors and customers on a range of design issues

  • Design experience with medical products, global teams, and working in a medically regulated industry

  • Demonstrated experience creating highly conceptual, forward-thinking design concepts.

  • Knowledge of GE Healthcare design/engineering tools and processes

  • Creative problem solver and solution developer when presented with conflicting requirements, business demands and technical risks/issues

  • Ability to meet reliability, performance, cost, serviceability, and delivery targets

Leadership:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance, training and coaching to less experienced Designers
