Job Description Summary
The Corporate EHS legal team provides global legal services to the Company on myriad environmental, health and safety issues, including the remediation of contaminated properties, M&A transactions, climate and sustainability policy development and advocacy, dispute resolution/litigation, in addition to supporting the GE businesses on EHS remedial/compliance matters.
The Executive Counsel – Environmental Remediation position is in GE’s Corporate Environmental Organization and will provide counseling, strategic legal advice and leadership primarily to the Corporate Legacy Liability team that manages the environmental remediation of GE’s global contaminated property portfolio. The Executive Counsel – Environmental Remediation will be an integral member of the Global, Law & Policy – Environmental, Health & Safety Organization and will report directly to the General Counsel – Environmental Programs. They will also work closely with the broader legal and technical environmental teams Company-wide and other internal subject matter experts (i.e., finance, communications, etc.) that support GE’s environmental program.
In this role, the successful candidate will develop and execute remedial legal strategies across a diverse array of environmental remediation projects and matters with significant long-term business implications. They will manage complex environmental legal and regulatory issues and play a key role in ensuring the Company’s goals of protecting the health and safety of people and the environment and full regulatory compliance while balancing fiduciary responsibility to management and shareholders.
Provide day-to-day legal advice and partner with the GE Corporate legacy liability technical team on a variety of environmental remedial regulatory issues (cleanup levels, NRD, risk management, etc.), including compliance counseling on applicable EHS requirements concerning air and water emissions, waste management, chemical management and occupational health and safety issues that may be related to remedial work being performed within GE’s contaminated property portfolio;
Support other Company environmental projects/matters, including business acquisitions and divestitures and brownfields redevelopment projects;
Represent the Company before Federal/State/Local/Global regulatory agencies, including enforcement proceedings, administrative hearings and preparation and review of contract documents (e.g., access agreements, easements, financial assurance instruments, etc.) and government agreements related to GE’s active remediation projects (e.g., Consent Agreements, Unilateral Orders, etc.);
Work with the various GE businesses on legal issues related to remedial liabilities associated with their historical manufacturing operations and acquisitions and divestitures;
Retain and manage outside counsel on environmental regulatory and litigation matters in a cost-effective manner to achieve Company objectives; and
Work closely with other GE functional legal team members (e.g., compliance, litigation, sourcing) and other GE Corporate subject matter professionals (e.g., finance, communications), as appropriate, to support project work and related matters.
Juris Doctorate or equivalent from an accredited law school
At least 12 years of relevant EHS remedial legal experience with a corporation, law firm or governmental agency providing working knowledge of environmental, health and safety laws and regulations. Prior in-house experience, in addition to private or government practice, preferred.
Knowledge of, and extensive experience with, the technical aspects of contaminated site cleanups and prior experience working closely with technical personnel implementing cleanups of contaminated sites.
In-house counsel registration and/or member in good standing with a State Bar of the United States or appropriate qualifications under local regulations
Strong oral and written communication and advocacy skills, including executive-level communication
Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and to take initiative and act independently with sound judgment, with little or no daily supervision
