Lead concept, design, implementation, and validation of the locomotive Traction & Auxiliary sub-system on large programs/New Product Introductions. Own Traction & Auxiliary control system functionality, and performance. Improve performance, reliability, reduce cost, develop advanced designs, and apply improved methods/tools. Mentor global peers and provide technical guidance. Focus for product management, systems, sub-systems, sourcing, manufacturing, quality, suppliers and service teams.
The Engineering Technical Leader - Controls Engineering will demonstrate leadership in coordinating business goals, programs, and processes for an area or business segment. In this role you will utilize your experience and expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and have the ability to impact short-term and long-term business goals, set strategies, and drive priorities.
Lead development of the Traction and Auxiliary sub-system with systems engineering, program management, commercial, simulation, software and hardware teams in the application of advanced controls techniques/methods/tools to meet emerging requirements for new applications such as modular control architecture, hybrid power developments, and new vehicle configurations
Define Traction and Auxiliary development strategies and lead the execution of high visibility large scale programs and New Product Introduction developments
Direct and own control system design and development for all locomotive Traction & Auxiliary features including function definition, requirements derivation, dynamic analysis, failure modes analysis, design trade-offs, implementation, and validation
Drive model based controls design processes and tools for embedded controls development
Direct and lead the integration of control systems with component hardware (alternators, rectifiers, DC/AC inverters, AC/AC convertors, motors, batteries) and other sub-systems (diesel engine, engine cooling, engine control, compressed air, ventilation) to meet performance, application and platform functional requirements
Direct and lead controls testing utilizing desktop simulation/modelling, integrated model/software testing using virtual simulators, integrated model/software/electronics testing using full operability HITL(hardware in the loop) simulators, locomotive validation testing, customer acceptance testing, and field in-service testing
Lead the investigation, root-cause identification, and resolution of control system reliability issues
Lead the execution of design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements
Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project as well as becoming technically engaged with other functional groups to maintain efficient project execution
Meet the program deliverables, be responsible for development of the Traction and Auxiliary control system architecture and strategies
Lead integration and coordination of the Traction and Auxiliary control strategy with the component hardware design teams and other vehicle subsystems
Provide timely communications to technical and line management on significant issues, impacts, or developments which effect schedule, costs, scope of work, or resource
Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
At least 5 years of experience in an engineering control design position with hands-on design, development and implementation of closed loop controls and diagnostics
Working knowledge Matlab/Simulink
Willing/able to support hands-on execution of simulation and on-locomotive testing & validatio
Ability and willingness to travel as required
Experience with DOORS, SysML, MagicDraw or similar requirements definition methods/tools
Experience in control model auto-coding for high speed, closed-loop real-time control
Experience with system level validation testing
Experience with transportation/locomotive auxiliary or traction equipment, systems, control, diagnostics, design or test
Hands-on/Working knowledge of rotating electric machines (alternators, motors), rectifiers/inverters/convertors, power electronics, propulsion battery
Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
Solid oral and written communication skills
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
