General Electric Lead Counsel - Commercial in Tianjin, China

Job Description Summary

The Commercial Counsel, in conjunction with the LMWP General Counsel, will be responsible for creating the legal delivery strategy for LMWP with a particular focus on China. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include support of Chinese MT, site support in China, contract review and negotiation, legal support on project execution and fulfilment and dispute management.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Operates as an integral member of the LMWP legal team.

  • Evaluates legal risks and develops procedures to mitigate such risks under the guidance of the LMWP General Counsel.

  • Advises in particular the regional LMWP teams in China on a wide variety of legal issues related to the business’s operations and commercial transactions; provides contract review, negotiation and assistance on sourcing, sales and service agreements.

  • Provides legal support and advice on dispute management and resolution.

  • Works closely with other functional leaders to support related matters (including compliance, litigation, sourcing, IP etc.).

  • Collaborates with commercial teams and assists in project and product development to support business objectives.

  • Participates in business/deal reviews and deal approval meetings – maintains independence as counsel while supporting the commercial teams in meeting their business objectives.

  • Advises the business on related regulatory issues and compliance matters. Prepares and delivers updates on legal developments and requirements to various audiences and provides ongoing advice on applicable laws and regulations governing the commercial activities of LMWP in China.

  • Supports the General Counsel in managing legal budget including all outside counsel spend.

  • Develops and maintains commercial legal policies and procedures and monitors to ensure compliance.

  • Works with other counsels in other GE businesses to develop best practices.

  • Maintains comprehensive knowledge of relevant industries in order to contribute to the commercial objectives of the business from a legal perspective. Qualifications & Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s law degree from an accredited university.

  • Admitted to the bar in either China.

  • Significant experience (8 years +) in project and construction law and general commercial and corporate law collected in a corporate legal department or a high-level law firm.

  • Multi jurisdiction experience in Asia.

  • Fluency in English, as well as Mandarin, is essential. Ability to work in other languages is a strong asset.

  • Excellent oral and written communication and persuasive skills, including executive-level communication.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, clear and pro-active attitude towards identifying and implementing solutions.

  • High degree of flexibility and resilience to work in a dynamic organization.

  • Secure judgement as to what to report to the senior legal and commercial management.

  • Ability to cope with high workload and to prioritize among numerous and various tasks.
