Job Description Summary
Role Summary/Purpose:
We are looking for Lead New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer to join our global FACTS (NPI) team. The position will be based in Tampere, Finland.
Grid Solutions delivers mainly high power (>100MVAr) Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) as Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensators (SVC), Fixed Series Capacitors (FSC) and Synchronous Condensers (SC). These are used to control power system voltage and reactive power flow as well as to improve the power system stability and transmission system efficiency. FACTS devices are also typically used to improve the integration of renewables to the power system making the future power system more sustainable. The Center of Excellence of power electronics-based products STATCOM and SVC is in Tampere, Finland, while the Center of Excellence of FSC and SC is in Saratoga Springs, United States.
In this position, you will mainly be doing research and development around SVC and STATCOM solutions and you will be reporting to global FACTS NPI Manager.
Key tasks:
Your main task is a control system design research and development. The target is to implement innovative control system features and algorithms mainly for STATCOM and SVC to comply with highly demanding customer specifications. You are expected to have capability to specify, design, validate and document the implemented solutions. Although you are focused on the R&D part of the control system design, you will be having close collaboration with Control Software Engineering team.
In this very versatile role, you have possibility to become recognized expert in the field of control system design, power electronics and power systems. Your areas of expertise will include:
• Control system design of grid connected power electronic devices
• Power engineering
• High power FACTS devices
• Integration of energy storage to the compensator
• Analyses of dynamic behaviour of FACTS devices
• Research and development process
In this role, you will be focusing on the product development as well as future products and technologies. Therefore, you will have the possibility see larger technology trends in the field of electrical power engineering. Due to the innovative nature of the role, you are expected to contribute on patents and scientific publications. This role gives you real opportunity to work for the more sustainable and green future power system.
The research and development work will comply with the good design practices starting from rigour specification definition to implementation, validation and documentation. Although you are joining to the NPI team located in Tampere, Finland, you will have close collaboration with the local Control Software Engineering team as well as HVDC NPI team located in Stafford, UK.

Rigour execution of NPI projects
Design and implementation of new control features
Produce high quality study documents and specifications
Plan, Specify, Organize and Participate testing
Participate to technical negotiations with end customers and other stakeholders
Support equipment sourcing (technical inputs, equipment evaluation)

Required Qualifications
MSc (or higher) degree in Power / Control System Engineering or equivalent
Specialized knowledge in Electrical Power Engineering and Control system design
Understanding of control theory behind grid connected devices
Knowledge in compensation systems, power electronics
Knowledge and experience on some of simulation tools for electric systems such as PSCAD, Matlab Simulink, RTDS or PSSE
Fluent written and oral skills, both in English and Finnish – other language skill is a benefit
Strong prioritizing and time management skills
