General Electric HVAC Maintenance Technician in Sunol, California

Job Description Summary

In this role, you will perform a wide variety of complex maintenance work to support operations at GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s Vallecitos Nuclear Center (GEH VNC), a commercial nuclear research and development facility. Responsibilities include installation, alteration, repair or rearrangement of machines, facilities, or equipment with focus on HVAC equipment. Will be required to perform mechanical, electrical and controls related work as necessary to support business needs.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Embrace GEH VNC’s nuclear safety culture, where work is performed with an overriding priority on integrity, safety, security and quality.

  • Responsible for maintaining, altering, installing, repairing or rearranging complex equipment or machines. Will diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform corrections based on complexity with no or minimal supervision.

  • Use, maintain, modify and repair, computerized HVAC control systems and their related inputs. Engage proprietary supplier as needed.

  • Perform work assignments in the Radiological Controlled Access Areas of our site and with equipment that is contaminated with radioactive nuclides. Escort suppliers in these areas.

  • Understand, troubleshoot and repair the application of air balance principles to control radioactive contamination.

  • Read, interpret and follow complicated drawings to make accurate alignment, fits or installations of parts and equipment such as piping, couplings, wiring, relays etc.

  • Required to tear down, overhaul, and reassemble intricate mechanisms, machine apparatus, etc. involving complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, controls and lubricating systems.

  • Provide service and repair to various systems and components for chemical or caustic equipment such as tanks, piping, valves sumps, pumps drains, etc.

  • Install, repair or service facility or production utility systems such as chillers, chilled water distribution, dx refrigeration equipment.

  • Perform chiller maintenance, including equipment tear down and rebuild.

  • Follow Operating Procedures and other written safety requirements to perform maintenance tasks, operate machines and equipment, check work and demonstrate satisfactory operating condition.

  • Operate various types of moving equipment used in installation and repair work, such as fork lift trucks, cranes, hoists, etc.

  • Assist Vendor Experts and/or Engineering Resources in the troubleshooting and assessment of equipment and machines.

  • Interface with computerized Maintenance Management System to perform and record tasks. Understand and adhere to safety controls for materials, equipment and facilities at VNC. Track and log the use of freon.

  • Perform duties and tasks conforming to all safety regulations and procedures. Keep facilities, materials, and work areas clean and orderly, exercising good housekeeping practices.

  • Document and report activities as required by customer and regulatory specifications.

  • Will normally interface with supervision, work associates and others requesting support services.

  • Must work with minimum supervision, exercising independent judgment relative to techniques and methods pertinent to assigned area of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED

  • Five years of experience in HVAC and chiller maintenance. This includes: (a) troubleshooting, teardown, rebuild and maintenance of industrial chillers; (b) application of thermodynamic cycles to HVAC troubleshooting and repair situations; and (c) ability to program and troubleshooting HVAC control systems.

  • Must have and maintain Universal Refrigeration License

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Work requires intense mental concentration to safely perform machine and equipment repair.

  • Intermittent lifting up to 40 lbs. individually and ability to manipulate bulky, heavy machinery and parts**

  • Ability to move around equipment, climb and work at elevated levels and in confined spaces. **

  • Ability to use ladders, go into pits and climb scaffolds. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and work in awkward positions while performing maintenance tasks.**

  • Ability to work in cold/heat**

  • Ability and willingness to work in Radiological Controlled Access Areas, pass pulmonary function test and wear proper radiological personal protective equipment (PPE) including respirators and SCBA/forced breathing air.

  • Valid Driver’s License. Must obtain VNC fork truck certification, VNC Crane/Sling certification

  • Ability to use a computer

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations, read complex technical manuals

  • Ability and willingness to work overtime without previous notice as necessary to meet business maintenance requirements

  • Ability and willingness to pass background check and site security requirements to obtain and maintain access to safeguards, and unescorted access to protected GEH Vallecitos areas

Desired Characteristics / Qualifications:

  • Experience in nuclear industry

  • Experienced radiation worker

  • Experience reading and interpreting complex mechanical and electrical drawings, sketches and schematics

  • Experience determining dimensions, mechanical fit up, roundness etc. using equipment such as micrometers, dial indicators, meggers, volt and amperage meters etc..

  • Experience in logical troubleshooting

  • Experience operating various types of machine equipment such as saws, shears, drill press, punch press, etc..

  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Suite, access and retrieval of information from the Internet, and experience updating maintenance systems
