Job Description Summary
You will be part of /or lead a small team of Control System Engineers and CAD Engineers that design and validate the hardware and the configuration of a Digital Control System used in a substation environment.
The role requires a technical background in Substation Automation Systems, Communication Systems or a relevant Control System Integration background used in the Power or Renewable Energy industry.
In addition to a relevant technical background this role requires strong planning and communication skills as well as the ability to coordinate and lead small and focused engineering teams.
Main duties and responsibilities will include;
To develop and maintain the project delivery plan. Provides guidance and leadership to the project team to ensure project objectives are met.
Handles all Project resource management and technical issues and escalates to Engineering Manager for support
Responsible for leading the capture of customer requirements and leading the design and implementation stages of the Digital Control System
Responsible for ensuring system integration and functional testing meets customer requirements
Responsible for defining the FST / FAT Test Strategy and ensure test objectives are met, from initial routine test to factory acceptance test.
Coordinate the configuration of IEC61850 IED’s via vendor specific tools and System Configuration Tools for complete system integration.
Knowledge of interlocking principles used in substation automation systems and their implementation on IEC61850 IED’s.
Coordinate and interface the HVDC Control System with Balance of Plant equipment and SCADA systems:
Define the main IO Lists of the control system
Analyze signal interfaces and ensure compatibility with the control system
Lead the configuration of Bay Controllers (BCU) and Merging Units for signal acquisition in digital substation environments in collaboration with NPI teams.
Coordinate the design of LAN networks/Communication Architectures and configuration of industrial ethernet switches/routers and satellite clocks
Follow the departments standard design practices, engineering reviews and guidelines.
Define Control Panel requirements and produce detailed design documentation for the control system using standard design blocks under the guidance of lead engineers. This may include
Panel Electrical Schematics (using Engineering Base tool)
Routine Test specification
General Assembly drawings
Bill of Materials
Prepare and present technical information for Substation Control Systems to internal and external customers.
Assist site activities relevant to the installation and commissioning of the control system.
Share engineering information and promote open dialogue.
Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
Lead Controls Engineer requirements;
Degree in Electronics/Electrical engineering or related field.
Project management skills, ability to lead engineering teams, prioritize work, manage risks and resources with support from the Engineering Manager.
Strong background in configuring Substation Bay Controllers/Merging Units/ IEC61850 IED’s
Experience in Control Panel design (preferably as used in substation/power plant environments)
Strong background in Distributed Control Systems / Substation Automation
Experience in working with engineering tools such as AutoCAD, e-base, Microsoft Visio
Understanding of fibre optic cabling systems
Understanding of LV cable sizing and distribution
Experienced in developing electrical designs for industrial control systems.
