Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate standard machine tools and specialized equipment to make, modify and rework parts and assemblies as directed.

  • Will use all types of measuring and hand tools and perform related duties.

  • Will work from written procedures, blueprints, repair manuals, sketches, and/or verbal instructions.

  • Write planning as required.

  • Will receive work assignments throughout the machine shop and will operate various machine tools.

  • Will perform repetitive and/or single piece lot work.

  • Must be able to assist and be directed by higher rated machinist and/or toolmaker in the manufacture of a variety of machine (engine) components and assemblies, and to develop/implement new processes.

  • Machinists own the repair process from start to finish, so they must be willing to bench, inspect, steam/clean, grit blast, etc. to keep hardware moving.

  • Maintain associated paperwork.

  • May be called upon to disposition hardware, maintain/change routers, and instruct others as required and perform related duties.

  • Instruct and train others as required.


  • Two years minimum experience within a structured training program (such as an apprentice program) with additional work experiences of 3 years (i.e. VTL, VBM, Lathe, Bridgeport, Mills, Drills, Grinders, etc.) OR 5 years work experiences as a skilled machinist (i.e. VTL, VBM, Lathe, Bridgeport, Mills, Drills, Grinders, etc.)

  • High school degree, or GED

  • Previous experience in the set-up and operation of standard machine tools

  • Experience operating various hand and power tools and basic machine tools and equipment

  • Experience using shop math, including fraction and decimals, with working knowledge in algebra, geometry and trigonometry

  • Demonstrated skill in the use of precision measuring instruments with experience inspecting machined hardware

  • Experience in reading and interpreting technical documents, drawings and standards

  • Knowledge of cutting tool capabilities and applications for both CNC and manual machining processes

  • Knowledge of fixture design and functionality

  • Knowledge of safety standards and safe guards

  • Ability to monitor multiple machines at the same time

  • Pass machinist written and functional test

  • Experience operating material handling and lifting devices, including ability to obtain forklift license as required


  • Apprentice graduate OR 10 years or more machinist experience (3 points)

  • Experience with C.N.C. or N.C. equipment (2 points)

  • Experience in using CMM equipment (1 point)

  • Experience in operating material handling and lifting devices, including ability to obtain a forklift license as required (1 point)

  • Experience in preventative maintenance and assisting in machine repairs (1 point)

  • Experience in working computers, applications, and keyboarding (1 point)
