Role Summary:

The Principal Engineer - Equipment Application COE, as a member of the Energy Consulting team, will be an active contributor to GE Power business initiatives related to power systems equipment and services.

Essential Responsibilities:

As the Principal Engineer - Equipment Application COE, you will:

  • Support customers with power systems engineering expertise, including design and equipment specification studies, commissioning support, troubleshooting, and failure mode analyses

  • Support continuous development of transmission and distribution products based on evolving codes and standards through participation in industry standards groups and leading innovative approaches to power equipment design

  • Be responsible for application, design, and sizing of substation, transmission, and distribution equipment

  • Perform power system load flow studies, fault studies, and transient studies using appropriate modeling software to understand and correctly apply and size substation, transmission, and distribution equipment

  • Effectively communicate results to both internal and external customers by preparing detailed written reports or presentations describing analyses performed, solutions developed, and customer value propositions

  • Develop projects with customers and manage contracts to ensure technical, schedule and cost objectives are met

  • Actively participate in identifying and cultivating new customers and business opportunities

  • Lead preparation of proposals and make customer presentations

  • Support domestic and international projects across regions depending on overall market needs, and communicate customer needs and values back to GE

  • Lead and organize project teams, guiding the work of individual contributors, ensuring high quality deliverables, budget, and on-time project metrics are met

  • Enhance industry knowledge and present technical content in regional forums and professional society conferences

  • Serve as a thought leader in industry activities

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical, mechanical, or electric power engineering (OR Bachelor’s Degree in physical sciences or applied mathematics with relevant electric power industry experience)

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical or electric power engineering; conventional or renewable power plant design and operation; transmission and distribution systems design and operation; or other relevant engineering experience in electric power utilities, power equipment manufacturing, high-voltage and high-power equipment testing, or electric power projects design and construction


  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time, as needed

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master’s Degree / PhD in electrical or electric power engineering, or related field of study

  • Experience in planning and execution of complex technical projects relevant to electric power systems

  • Industry reputation, prior IEEE / CIGRE published articles related to practical topics, or participation in industry standards working groups

  • Awarded patents on HV power equipment applications

  • Advanced experience with dynamic and time-domain simulation tools (e.g., FORTRAN programming of user-written “black box” models in PSCAD, or use of MATLAB scripting to automate multiple iterative approaches to simulation)

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills (e.g., ability to effectively communicate with all levels of GE and customer / plant staff)

  • Understanding of grid systems interactions with power plant equipment and controls

  • Experience with dynamic and time-domain simulation tools (ATP/EMTP, PSCAD/EMTDC, PSLF, PSS/E, ASPEN, and MATLAB)

  • Demonstrated application of complex mathematics and engineering to real-world electric power problems

  • Strong project management skills
