General Electric Additive Advanced Manufacturing Engineer in Schenectady, New York

Job Description Summary

The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer will lead the equipment development and industrialization efforts for the Additive Concrete Technology Program, focusing on developing high quality, economical, and customized equipment to achieve process and product requirements. The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer will oversee the development and integration of the all the necessary manufacturing, quality, and equipment parameters for industrialization to form a reliable field-based construction system. This will include the rebar assembly and placement, COBOD printer, Concrete batch plant and mixing system, along with a comprehensive quality inspection system ranging from manual instrumentation to automated vision systems. The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer will assist with the planning and execution of equipment and process testing and upgrades at our facility in Bergen, NY. Additionally, this role will interact with our strategic partners, 3rd party vendors, and GE Global Research, while also providing input on equipment development requirements, structural design optimization and design for manufacturing, along IP and technology development roadmap sessions.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of Additive Concrete Equipment to achieve business case objectives, optimize process flow and equipment arrangement, reduce risks associated with mobile factory setup and transport, improve operating capabilities, and help ensure EHS compliance

  • Collaborate with project team and external vendors to develop equipment specifications that are aligned to the structural design, process, quality control, and code requirements. Equipment development needed for indoor operations and to transition to an outdoor, field-based construction environment, including 5G wireless provisions and industrialization strategy for reliability, inclusive of data collection and data management

  • Lead efforts to design and optimize equipment capabilities for concrete mixing, pumping and printing, along with rebar assembly and placement. Conduct testing to validate equipment and leverage 6 sigma/ Design of Experiment methodologies as part of a APQP framework for process development.

  • Lead the development and review of equipment proposals/concepts. Establish synergies where appropriate across all purchased equipment and hardware selection.

  • Support quality control system development, including documentation for standard work procedures, manufacturing specifications, quality testing and operating instructions. Assist with establishing process parameter control limits and reaction plans for Process FMEA risk mitigation.

  • Support operations for constructing/printing test specimens and oversee process monitoring and material sampling in support of the Additive Concrete Technology Certification efforts.

  • Provide input to the Additive Concrete Strategic Roadmap and budgetary requirements to develop next generation equipment and processes.

  • Leverage lean tools and methodology to minimize waste and inefficiencies as integrated part of the equipment and process development phase. Collaborate across business functions (Sourcing, Engineering, EHS, Quality, Field Service, PMO) to align Technology Development with Industrialization requirements.

  • Uses judgment to make decisions or solve moderately complex tasks or problems in areas of operational/product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering. Takes new perspective on existing solutions. Uses technical experience and expertise for data analysis to support recommendations. Uses multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own function to arrive at decisions.

  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience. May lead small projects with moderate risks and resource requirements. Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to build consensus. Developing persuasion skills required to influence others on topics within field.

Required Qualifications

  • 4 year technical degree with at least 10 years of experience across some combination of operations, engineering, project management, and sourcing

Desired Characteristics

  • Proven track record of developing prototype/pilot stage equipment and processes with ability to scale to production environment

  • Ability to work independently with 3rd party vendors and suppliers. Strong time management skills with proven ability to prioritize and problem solve.

  • Computer skills: MS Office Suite, CAD systems and some experience with PLC logic and software desired.

  • Ability to read and interpret 2D drawings and schematics for facilities and equipment.

  • Willingness to be flexible and adapt to the dynamic environment of technology development and evolution of requirements. Effective communicator and team oriented.
