General Electric Staff Software Engineer in San Ramon, California

Role Summary:You will be responsible for programing a component, feature and or feature set. Works independently and contributes to the immediate team and to other teams across business. You will also contribute to design discussions.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership and defining, developing, and evolving software in a fast paced and agile development environment using the latest software development technologies and infrastructure

  • Apply principles of SDLC and methodologies like Lean/Agile/XP, CI, Software and Product Security, Scalability, Documentation Practices, refactoring and Testing Techniques

  • Expert in writing code that meets standards and delivers desired functionality using the technology selected for the project. Demonstrates the initiative to explore alternate technology and approaches to solving problems.

  • Proactively shares information across the team, to the right audience with the appropriate level of detail and timeliness

  • Capture system level requirements by brainstorming with Senior Architects, Data Scientists, Businesses, and Product Managers.

  • Identify the scope of the work, provide initial estimate and justify the estimate with facts.

  • Engage in technical discussions; participate in technical designs, and present technical ideas through white boarding.

  • Ensure that completed tasks are delivered to meet the product release goal. Maintain code quality through best practices, unit testing, and code quality automation.

  • Make informed technology choices after due diligence and impact assessment.

  • Serve as subject matter expert that meet standards and deliver the desired functionality using the technology selected for the project.

  • Assess application performance, then optimize and improve it through best coding practices to support software build, release, and deployment processes.

  • Experience with DevOps culture and automation

  • A strong focus on customer outcomes

  • A passion for delivering automation and software process productivity

Qualifications/Requirements: Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or in “STEM” Majors (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)

  • A minimum of 6 years of professional experience Computer Science OR Master’s degree with 4 years of experience software development (enterprise, web-based, etc)

    Eligibility Requirements:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. GE may agree to sponsor an individual for an employment visa now or in the future if there is a shortage of individuals with particular skills.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Strong knowledge of Object Oriented Analysis and Design, Software Design Patterns and Java coding principles and TDD

  • Passionate about learning, adopting and contributing to Open Source software community

  • Willing to flex their muscles into other roles like code review, pair programming

  • Demonstrates clear understanding of high availability architecture, performance optimization, effective troubleshooting and debugging

  • Expert in cloud development in AWS and manage services Aurora, SQS, S3, EMR

  • Expert in Terraform, cloud automation scripting language.

  • Experienced with Spark and developing pyspark application.

  • Experienced in open source services such as Airflow and Genie and have developed against them.

  • Proficient in writing software build and deployment automations using Jenkins

  • Experience in managing version control systems (SVN, GIT, branching, merging etc…)

  • Demonstrates the initiative to explore alternate technology and approaches to solving problems

  • Skilled in breaking down problems, documenting problem statements and estimating efforts

  • Influences through others; builds direct and "behind the scenes" support for ideas. Preemptively sees downstream consequences and effectively tailors influencing strategy to support a positive outcome. Uses experts or other third parties to influence.

  • Able to verbalize what is behind decisions and downstream implications. Continuously reflecting on success and failures to improve performance and decision-making.

  • Understands when change is needed. Participates in technical strategy planning.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
