General Electric Sr Customer Application Engineer in San Ramon, California
Job Description Summary
This position will be responsible for designing, modeling, configuration, testing and commissioning of Protection and Control (P&C) systems for customers outsourcing their power system design and testing work. The successful candidate should also be very familiar with IEC61850 configuration & data model, digital substations, and virtualization of protection.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
Design and testing of customized P&C solutions (both in house and at customer installations) to meet user specifications & requirements
Develop test setups, test plans, and test case (including wiring diagrams and configurations or relays and controllers)
Perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) including Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) tests using real-time digital simulators
Prepare test reports, project reports, and project deliverables
Analyze and troubleshoot field cases involving GE or third-party relays
Perform engineering studies including but not limited to power flows, short circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, voltage & loss analysis, etc.
Participate in development of project proposals and work/effort estimate
Effectively engage with customers to clarify requirements and present completed work.
Participate in business development activities to grow services, including writing technical papers, presentation to customers or at conferences
May require travel up to 20 - 40% of the time depending on projects
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in power system protection and control
Desired Characteristics
Master's Degree or higher
P.Eng./PE certification
Experience in programming GE relays, specifically UR and MICOM family
Experience in designing power system protection, control and automation schemes
Excellent understanding of all major protection principles including Distance, Line Differential, Transformer Differential, Bus, Feeder, Generator and Motor protections.
Working experience with power system software tools such as ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, and MATLAB for modeling and analysis.
Familiarity with one or more programming languages (Pythan, C++, VB, etc.) is an asset
Ethical and professional business manner in interaction with team members and customers
Customer focused; open to accept new challenges and share ideas
Technical skills to execute projects, identify opportunities, and write proposals
Excellent understanding of communication system protocols and architectures in electric power industry with focus on IEC61850 model and configuration.
Good knowledge and understanding of digital substation and virtualization of protection systems
Familiarity with transmission and distribution protection standards/codes
Strong communication skills including technical writing and presentations
