General Electric Rotating Machines – Renewal Parts Engineer (MECHANICAL) in Peterborough, Ontario

Job Description Summary

As part of the GE Peterborough rotating machines renewal parts team, you will play a significant role in helping serve our customers by providing spare parts and technical support for GE’s global fleet of large industrial motors and generators. GE has been producing rotating electrical equipment for more than 130 years, producing motors up to 100,000hp. Our machines found in a variety of critical applications, including marine, industrial and power generation.

You will provide engineering support to the renewal parts sales and project execution teams, as well as work closely with external suppliers to define technical solutions to meet our customer’s needs.

The successful candidate will report to the rotating machines renewal parts team Leader.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

As a renewal parts engineer (Mechanical), you will:

  • Work closely with customers and the renewal parts sales team to identify the specific parts required by the customer based on part descriptions and legacy design data.

  • Compile technical data packages for components, consisting of drawings, bills of materials and technical specifications.

  • Analyze and validate material and process equivalencies to overcome obsolescence challenges for legacy designs.

  • Develop technical specifications and solutions for retrofits of large assemblies such as heat exchanges & bearings.

  • Deliver clear design instructions to CAD designers or field service personnel, review drawings and bills of material for quality.

  • Work with external suppliers or third party contractors and provide engineering support as required during the manufacture and testing of components and assemblies. Provide final review and approval of test and inspection reports.



  • Bachelor or advanced degree in mechanical /manufacturing engineering.

  • Strong overall technical skills with ability to do calculations from first principles.

  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and documentation.


  • Knowledge of common manufacturing processes, shop tolerances and industry standards.

  • Expertise in bills of material, with PLM Teamcenter experience an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to deliver on-time and prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Desired Characteristics:

  • 3 or more years of related experience in design, analysis, manufacturing, repair, field service, refurbishment and installation of large rotating equipment.

  • Proficiency with mechanical design tools associated with structural design and stress analysis, rotor dynamics, Finite element analysis (ANSYS), 3D modeling (Pro-E, AutoCAD), vibration analysis, torsional analysis and noise prediction.

  • Collaborative attitude and ability to work in a cross functional and diverse team.

  • Solution oriented and pragmatic, with a commitment to continuous improvement.

  • Strong customer focus.

  • Fluency in English/French.
