General Electric Lead Protection and Control Engineer in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois

Job Description Summary

The Lead protection and control engineer is responsible to perform and lead all technical aspects of electrical substation protection and control engineering and design deliverables. You should have a great attention to detail of all project requirements and lead other designers to deliver a high quality product, , on time and under budget with a safety mindset.

You will conduct basic and detailed design activities, ensures detailed execution progress and coordinates delivery of required engineering documentation for procurement, manufacturing and site erection associated to concerned activity based on customer specifications and requirement, and internal standards.

This position can be remote; based anywhere in the US.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ability to provide protection, automation and control design for electrical utility, Oil & Gas, Offshore Wind transmission and distribution substations (12kV to 500kV) . The P&C Engineer must be creative and able to lead their project design team to deliver a high-quality product while promoting ease of installation, operation and maintenance of the system.

  • Able to work independently on the following P&C drawings: one line protection and meteringdiagrams, tripping tables/matrix, logic diagrams, Aux power DC and AC one line diagrams, relay protection and control schematics, metering, monitoring and alarm schematics, SCADA block diagram, racks and panels views, wiring diagrams, control house layouts, cable schedules and bill of materials. Develop optimized designs with a safety mindset .

  • Coordinate P&C design with Electrical layout engineers and designers, Relay Setting Engineers, site managers, commissioning engineers and field personnel

  • Coordinate P&C design with Electrical layout engineers and designers, Relay Setting Engineers, site managers, commissioning engineers and field personnel

  • Coordinate with vendors and manufacturers and review technical documentation related to P&C design

  • Leverage working experience with application of IEDs from GE, SEL, ABB for engineering and design of T&D lines, transformers, busses, reactors and cap banks to define project’s protection and control philosophy and theory of operations.

  • Prepare P&C engineering estimates. Estimate P&C equipment quantities and costs for proposals.

  • At the beginning of a project, assess the estimated resources and material. Identify issues that may need to be further clarified or defined and form a project execution plan

  • During project execution, communicate regularly with Project Engineering Manager. Identify possible risks to the project and resolve engineering and design aspects that impact material cost, schedule, engineering budget, safety and quality

  • Perform applicable design calculations required for DC battery and charger sizing, voltage drop calculations, aux AC power design and to define CT and PT/CCVT parameters to be specified.

  • Create and support development of FAT , SAT, Outages and cutover plans and procedures. Support field testing and commissioning either from office or by on site presence.

  • Perform engineering and constructability reviews of P&C deliverables of own project and those of other teams (peer review) .

  • Support the engineering manager in meeting business KPIs and department goals. Be an active participant and contributor to improvements in design procedures, standards development, quality, productivity. Proactively participate in Return of Experience and Lessons learned

  • Execute projects while maintaining compliance to business policies, tools, procedures, methods. Embrace a culture of humility, transparency and deliver with focus.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Utility, Renewable and/or Industrial HV & EHV substation’s P&C and SCADA design

  • Ability and willingness to travel 20% of the time, including international, and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies

  • Licensed as an Electrical (Power) Professional Engineer and willingness to serve as the responsible engineer

  • Preferred GE office location is Oakbrook Terrace, IL. Other GE offices may be considered.

  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of software to develop productivity tools and familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD , EBase)

  • Knowledge of power system analysis software such as ETAP, Aspen Oneliner for relay coordination, load flows, short circuit and arc flash studies.

  • Familiarity with creation of Relay Settings and SCADA configuration files.

  • Experience with GIS substation projects, as well as AIS

  • Equipment and P&C field testing, commissioning and troubleshooting experience influencing Protection, Control and SCADA designs

  • Understanding of safety, operation, maintenance and testing practices common to utility substations, transmission and generation facilities

  • Familiarity with IEC 61850 based Digital Substations

  • Familiarity with NERC-CIP standards and guidelines for Cyber Security, Grid Interconnection

  • Familiarity with US Electric Utility customer design and construction standards and industry codes and standards such as NEC, ANSI, NERC- CIP

  • Masters in Power Systems

  • Active participant in professional organizations such as IEEE, CIGRE

  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational and time management skills

  • Familiarity with project management and commercial aspects
