Job Description Summary
The Principal Engineer-CFD Study will be responsible in performing CFD Analysis for multiple Steam Power products (Boilers, ESP, Wet Flue Gas Desulfurization, Steam Turbines, NID, Sea water FGDs) and various evolving technologies. Should be a Subject Matter Expert providing technical leadership, direction and mentoring technical team of engineers supporting Fossil India Engineering projects. In addition, the individual will manage complex issues within the functional area of expertise, be involved in long-term planning, contribute to the overall engineering strategy, ready to shape and support technology growth and journey to next level.
Principal Engineer- CFD Study will be a part of Performance Engineering Team which is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on an approach, mindset, and process. The Principal Engineer will be a “Controlled Title Holder” where the title is awarded and controlled by Chief Engineers Office and is a champion within Technical Community. The person will be a role model and technical authority for Fossil India Organization within Steam Power also collaborating closely with various Domain Experts working on complex jobs and issues, perform reviews and sign off. Be responsible for technology development, execute NPI Programs, drive cost competitiveness and ensure best in class system performance with right quality, depth and breadth of analysis and documentation.
- Should be highly proficient and a well-recognized expert into CFD studies involving Gas Path and Multi-phase fluids using ANSYS Fluent and ANSYS CFX especially handling large datasets. Should have good experience on resolving critical issues related to Flow Distribution. A working knowledge of Steam Power products like Boilers, ESP, Wet FGD, NID, Steam Turbines at domain level will be an added advantage.
The person should be proficient in following:
To check flow profiles in modified envelope/water walls/back pass, including potential ash accumulation and erosion in Boilers or similar equipment, Combustion Modelling and Simulation
To understand/validate mass flow distribution, streamlined flow, flow development and separation and design internal correction measures such as guide vanes, splitter plates, perforated tray etc.
To understand velocity profiles in critical bus duct routings ensuring pressure drop guarantees
To ensure temperature profile evenness/ stratification inside furnace, extended back pass, back pass/similar equipment.
To ensure Cvs of critical parameters such as Velocity, Temperature, Pressure value at various battery limits.
Validate process design of Absorber/ Scrubber/ similar equipment subjected to two phase interaction of liquid/slurry- Gas, spray pattern, slurry particle distribution, retention, Chemical kinetics.
To validate pressure drop guarantees of vendor equipment like Mist Eliminator, Perforated Tray inside Absorber/ Scrubber/ similar equipment.
The person should have domain expertise on Multiphase flow in general and should have hands-on working experience on:-
Fluidization, entrainment, classification, erosion
Separation and transport of particulate solids
Advanced CAD & CFD Skills, owning processes from “Start to Finish”, experienced in Modules and
Methods, Pre-Processing (CAD Modelling, Meshing and CFD Models), Solving and Post Processing steps
Individual shall be proficient with calculations of energy-transfer rates and mass-transfer rates at the interface between phases in a fluid system. Understanding of shear & boundary layers (flow, thermal, diffusion) and necessary application is an essential part of the competence. Shall be experienced on unsteady flow effects, acoustics, and vibrations and ability to come up with innovative means and methods to solve customer issues. Shall be exceptionally strong on fundamentals and should have experience with Thermodynamic Cycles, Analysis, Thermodynamic component design and Integration.
Uses high level of judgment to make steps and handle complex tasks or issues/problems in areas of design, commissioning of projects, technology, or engineering. Has ability to assess quality of information given and ask pertinent questions to stakeholders. Should be innovative and able to offer new solutions to problems outside of set parameters and can construct and provide recommendations. Uses multiple internal and external sources outside of own function to help arrive at a conclusions.
High learning agility to quickly pick up product knowledge, domain knowledge and software tool expertise to model high fidelity multi physics complex models. Strong interpersonal skills to build effective relationship with stakeholders, effective communication skills to be successful in matrix organization.
Should be well conversant with Technical Risk Assessment methods like FMEA, Hazop etc and should be able to drive, identify, mitigate risks- Effective Risk Management and Control. Should be able to work on Invention Disclosures to protect technology that provides competitive advantage to Business and -protecting IP of the company. Analysis and design for safety, manufacturability, cost and serviceability principles integrated in design guidelines.
Person is expected to contribute to these areas of activity and responsibility
Preparation, checking and approval of technical documentation and conducting Technical
Failure investigations and root cause analyses.
Actively supporting knowledge sharing events for members of the Technical Community e.g.
Liaising with engineering bodies, universities, and other scientific bodies.
Contributing to conferences and standards bodies.
Qualifications / Requirements
M.S./M.E./M.Tech/PhD (Mechanical, Chemical, or similar)
Minimum 16-20 years engineering and or technology experience ( with 12 Plus years of experience in application of CFD and related Industrial Research).

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proven experience working in multi-functional engineering teams focused on basic design definition and/or detailed engineering activities for Power, Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, or similar type project execution efforts.
Strong Domain expertise in field of Aero Dynamics, Thermal Management, Multi Phase Fluids and demonstrated technical leadership in advancing the state of the art in a technical specialty with ability to establish standard practices within the areas of expertise.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities independently.
Application of Machine Learning for Flow Paths, Combustion, High-performance computing, Experience with GPUs
