General Electric Specialist - Materials Scientist-Metallography & Microscopy - Energy Research in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

GE Vernova’s Advanced Research business is the central innovation engine for GE’s portfolio of energy businesses, which will be unified under one banner called GE Vernova. The research organization is made up of 250+ researchers representing virtually every major scientific and engineering discipline. Collectively, they are driving major research programs and initiatives to decarbonize power, accelerate renewables, and promote electrification and the creation of a 21st century grid fit to power a zero-carbon energy future.

GE Vernova Advanced Research is looking for a Materials Scientist with experience in metallography sample preparation, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. As a Specialist, you will support research and development for a broad range of projects. You will interact with colleagues that will be submitting samples. You will discuss their needs, determine the work flow, set priorities, perform the tasks outlined above, generating reports and when needed report out to the teams.

Roles and Responsibilities

You will:

  • Independently operate various pieces of laboratory equipment and investigate novel material components.

  • Be responsible for the safe and compliant use/operation and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials.

  • Build relationships with colleagues at GE Vernova Advanced Research and the Vernova businesses with a wide variety of technical expertise and business responsibilities.

  • Provide experimental data for IP disclosures and patent application processes.

  • Be a member of a multidisciplinary team developing functional material systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline, or Bachelor’s degree with 2-3 years’ of hands-on industrial experience in an analytical chemistry/microscopy organization.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems with instrumentation.

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new areas of research.

  • Ability to work with diverse, high-paced teams.

  • Ability to write reports and provide verbal summaries.

  • Willing to work government-funded projects.

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals, now or in the future, for this job opening.

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

  • Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics

  • Background in materials science, metallurgy, chemistry, chemical processing, process engineering, as well as hands-on experience in sample preparation, light microscopy, SEM and other characterization instruments.

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $110,000 USD, annually. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location.
