General Electric Specialist - Battery & Fuel Cell Testing - Energy Research in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

GE Vernova’s Advanced Research business is the central innovation engine for GE’s portfolio of energy businesses, which will be unified under one banner called GE Vernova. The research organization is made up of 250+ researchers representing virtually every major scientific and engineering discipline. Collectively, they are driving major research programs and initiatives to decarbonize power, accelerate renewables, and promote electrification and the creation of a 21st century grid fit to power a zero-carbon energy future.

GE Research is looking for a batteries and fuel cell testing engineer with capabilities in material science. As a Specialist, you will be support research and development of materials processes for a broad range of projects. You will be responsible for the design, set up and operation of electrical or mechanical systems for energy storage and conversion devices, including high temperature solid oxide fuel cells and Li ion batteries, chemical processing, formulation of functional material compositions, scale-up, material characterization, and system integration and testing.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

You will:

  • Assist in the development of new materials or chemical processes

  • Work with researchers to develop methods and build equipment that can perform various tasks relevant to chemical processes in GE projects

  • Perform basis characterization of chemical materials

  • Identify key technical issues, develop new processes and iteratively improve system performance through experimentation and process optimization with assistance from scientists and engineers

  • Independently operate various pieces of laboratory equipment, investigate novel material components and integrated material systems, and utilize basic analytical methods.

  • Be responsible for the safe and compliant use/operation and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials

  • Build relationships with colleagues at GE Global Research with a wide variety of technical expertise and business responsibilities.

  • Provide experimental data for IP disclosures and patent application processes.

  • Be a member of a multidisciplinary team developing functional material systems

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Materials Science, Ceramic, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline, or Bachelor’s degree with 2-3 years’ of hands-on industrial experience in Materials Science, Ceramic, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.

  • Familiarity with Chemical processing and testing methods

  • Ability to build and troubleshoot chemical process equipment

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new areas of research

  • Ability to work with diverse, high-paced teams

  • Willing to work government-funded projects

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Desired Characteristics

  • Background in materials science, ceramic, chemistry, chemical processing, process engineering, as well as hands-on experience in materials testing and characterization

The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $11,000 USD, annually. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location.
