General Electric Senior Engineer - Optimization in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

As a Senior Engineer in Optimization, you will have the opportunity to shape and lead cutting edge research programs to manage operations of complex cyber physical systems driven by GE businesses and US Government needs. This role reports to and works closely with the head of the Optimization research lab. The Optimization research lab is a multi-disciplinary team focused on providing technology guidance for complex enterprise problems leveraging operations research, simulation, inferential Bayesian statistics, AI/ML using high performance/ large scale data process and mathematical model solver technologies.

Job Description

At GE Research, we develop technologies to lead in energy transition, precision health and the future of flight. The Optimization lab develops technologies for GE businesses with applications in supply chain optimization, asset performance management and advanced manufacturing for Aviation, Energy and Healthcare industries. The Optimization team focuses on technologies for the US Government with applications in cybersecurity, 5G and additive manufacturing.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Lead multidisciplinary teams of GE business, GE Research, and external partners to invent and mature the next generation of supply chain optimization, advanced manufacturing and cybersecurity solutions.

  • Work with the head of the Optimization lab to develop and implement a cohesive research strategy to ensure the success of new and ongoing research projects

  • Develop partnerships, establish collaborations, and serve in professional societies to advance the reputation of the Optimization lab and group members externally and internally.

  • Own the development and maintenance of technology roadmaps and demonstrate accountability for a pipeline of funded projects.

  • Lead the development and writing of internal and external proposals.

  • Lead by example by exercising research excellence as shaping, executing, delivering and communication of research

  • Patent your inventions and develop a record of publications via conferences and peer reviewed journals.

  • Mentor researchers and contribute to their professional and technical growth.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Computational Sciences or related field with a minimum of 5 years of relevant research experience or MS degree in Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Computational Sciences or related field with a minimum of 10 years of relevant research experience

  • A well-established record of research in an area relevant to one or more areas of complex cyber physical systems with applications in supply chain optimization, asset performance management, advanced manufacturing, and cybersecurity.

  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams to mature complex engineering systems from concept thru validation.

  • Demonstrated use and deep understanding of a wide array of commercial and open-source development environments, solvers and programming languages. (e.g. CPLEX, Gurobi, MATLAB, AnyLogic, SAS, C#, Java, Python, R)

  • Ability to assess impact of alternative technical approaches with peers from other technical disciplines.

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Skills:

  • A track record of technical publications, professional society service, and rich network of researchers in the adjacencies of decision sciences, operations research, applied statistics and controls disciplines

  • In-depth knowledge of systems analysis and/or systems-of-systems modeling

  • Experience developing technical ideas with external customers and a track record of converting ideas to programs.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interface with senior leaders and customers with clarity and confidence.

  • Ability to adapt and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, outcome-focused industrial research environment.
