As a Senior Engineer – Autonomous Systems, you will work with GE Aerospace Research, GE Businesses, and external customers to define, build, and execute strategic research and development programs focused on Robotics and Autonomous Systems. Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop new technology concepts with strategic impact focused on robotics and autonomy, including design, analysis, integration and testing of electromechanical systems, mechanical and soft robotic systems, simulation, motion planning, perception, manipulation, and human-robot interaction.

  • Actively lead and participate in design, architecture, and development efforts. Be a vital team member on multi-disciplinary programs that take real-world problems and deliver solutions. Program scope can range from quick lab prototypes that validate concepts and reduce risk, all the way up to multi-year programs that deliver robust, efficient, and scaled-up robotics and autonomous systems directly to customers.

  • Optimize quality/time/cost by making smart choices and technology tradeoffs, driven by requirements. Adopt best-practices in system design, documentation, testing, validation, product implementation and scalability, based on program maturity and customer needs.

  • Lead projects, proposals, relationship building, and the development of new autonomous and robotic systems technology. Engage with internal and external thought leaders across the robotic technology stack to shape new programs, drive new concepts and applications.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics or a related discipline with at least 5 years of experience in design and development of robotic systems OR Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics or a related discipline with at least 8 years of experience in design and development of robotic systems OR Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics or a related discipline with a minimum of 10 years of experience in design and development of robotic software and systems.

  • Strong execution track record.

  • Significant experience in systems architecture, design, and system integration.

  • Significant experience in one or more robot control and motion planning areas, such as path planning, trajectory optimization, inverse kinematics, and motion planning for manipulation.

  • Experience in integrating mechanical, electrical, and software components into reliable working systems while satisfying tight product design and manufacturing constraints.

  • Experience with robotic perception, sensor fusion, and computer vision.

  • Experience programming in C/C++/Python.

  • Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS).

  • Experience in leading internal and external funded programs, shaping and pursuing new programs with government research agencies, such as DARPA, ARPA-E, ONR, AFRL, ARL, etc.

  • Track record on industrial/academia and/or Intellectual Property (IP) publications on related robotic topics.

  • Possess superior problem-solving skills and independent decision-making abilities, all while operating in a fast-paced team setting.

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

  • Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics

  • 3 or more years working in a defense or industrial domain.

  • Experience in software engineering and software architecture.

  • Experience with modern AI/ML frameworks, such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.

  • Experience in developing user interfaces, web stack (e.g. JavaScript).

  • Experience developing camera and sensor drivers.

  • Experience in implementing robotic programs for robot arms, e.g., Fanuc, ABB, UR or similar

  • Demonstrated ability to convert high-level customer needs into a technical development strategy.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Communicate effectively both in written and oral English.

  • Self-motivated, innovative, willing to pursue new technical areas and capable of working independently.

  • US Citizenship is preferred.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $205,000 USD, annually. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location.
