General Electric Senior 5G Wireless Application Engineer in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

As a Senior 5G Wireless Application Engineer, you will have the opportunity to work with the latest 5G equipment to demonstrate uses cases in enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC), and Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) to develop edge applications for GE’s businesses such as Aviation, Power, Renewables, and Healthcare as well as U.S. government agencies such as the DoD and DoE. Key GE use cases for 5G include wireless patient monitoring for GE Healthcare, 5G enabled rapid data access for predictive aircraft maintenance for GE Aviation, and 5G Smart Warehouses for the U.S. government. Edge applications and 5G use cases developed under these programs will be matured and transitioned into GE business products.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Work in an interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers to help transition 5G wireless communication applications from early-stage lab demonstrations to fieldable prototypes.

  • Design and develop 5G use cases/applications by working with GE businesses and with external customers.

  • Execute functional testing, performance analysis, and validation of the 5G-based applications.

  • Partner with U.S. government agencies to help shape winning proposals and lead R&D projects that will create innovative solutions for dual use cases (commercial and military) in 5G wireless communication.

  • Collaborate with universities, industrial consortiums, commercial partners, and others to advance the state of the art in 5G wireless communication.

  • Participate in IEEE, ISA, 3GPP, or other relevant standards bodies to help drive connectivity solutions to support GE business needs.

  • Publish technical papers, file patents, and contribute to open-source communities.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related disciplines with a minimum of 5 years of industry related experience OR Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related disciplines with a minimum of 8 years of industry related experience OR Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related disciplines with a minimum of 10 years of industry related experience.

  • Experience with system integration and evaluation of wireless connectivity solutions including but not limited to: 5G, 4G/LTE Cellular, and WiFi.

  • Experience with developing communication applications using 5G/WiFi infrastructure.

  • Working experience with Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) devices for processing data at the edge as well as in the cloud.

  • Strong embedded coding experience with C/C++, Python, etc.

  • Understanding of edge to cloud communication and related technologies (AWS, MQTT, Dockers, Kubernetes).

  • Will consider remote work arrangements.

Desired Characteristics

  • Coding experience with Java, MATLAB, etc.

  • Experience working with System on Chip (SoC) wireless/radio devices.

  • Experience with Linux build systems (e.g., Yocto, Embedded Linux).

  • Familiarity with CI/CD systems (Jenkins).

  • Knowledge of 3GPP standards for 5G/4G.

  • Experience with writing proposals in response to government solicitations.
