As a Research Scientist in the Materials Characterization Lab, you will focus on the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis of materials in collaboration with a diverse team of scientists at GE Aerospace Research to develop composition/structure/property relationships for advanced materials and develop novel characterization methods.

Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
Work closely with researchers to plan and execute characterization for a variety of projects that may include metals, high temperature alloys, superalloys, ceramics, thermal/environmental barrier coatings, and ceramic matrix composites.
Interact and collaborate with materials scientists and materials development teams across GE.
Maintain and operate multiple pieces of equipment necessary to conduct experiments.
Reduce data to useful formats using appropriate tools.
Maintain accurate records of the work performed and other records required by the projects.
Share project progress through oral presentations and written reports.
Present technical work both internally and externally.
Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment.
Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.
Required Qualifications
PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related discipline, or Master’s degree with at least 7 years post-degree work experience in TEM characterization.
Ability to perform a wide range of sample preparation methods for TEM analysis such as dual beam FIB-SEM for site specific extraction, electropolishing, ion milling and microtomy.
TEM characterization.
Demonstrated ability in advanced characterization, such as hands-on experience of TEM for structure visualization (bright field, dark field, high angle annular dark field), phase chemistry analysis (STEM-EDS, EELS Spectroscopy, Energy Filtered Imaging), phase crystallography (Electron diffraction for phase ID and defect analysis), and HRTEM (direct imaging of atomic lattice structure, atomic scale resolution).
Strong interpersonal, leadership and written and verbal communication skills in a diverse, global team environment.
Ability to prioritize tasks, manage sample queue, and perform multiple, concurrent tasks.
Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team advising the team on best TEM approaches to achieve desired results and presenting the findings to aid in establishing structure/processing/property relationships.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products like Excel and Powerpoint.
Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY

Desired Characteristics
Experience in metallurgy within an industrial research setting preferred.
Experience operating TEM instruments such as Tecnai Osiris and Titan Themis.
Experience in other material characterization techniques such as SEM, EBSD and XRD.
Experience with data reduction algorithms and post-processing.
Experience in Synchrotron characterization.
Familiarity with machine learning and advanced post-processing and automation techniques.
Experience writing government proposals.
The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $150,000 USD, annually. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s experience, their education, and the work location.
