General Electric Research Engineer - Manufacturing & Material Modeling in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

As a Research Engineer - Manufacturing & Material Modeling, you will be directly responsible for the development of physics-based models of new materials and processes for applications including additive manufacturing, power generation and aircraft propulsion. In this role, you will implement the latest computational tools to understand materials processes and behavior, and will support key material and manufacturing development programs across GE.

Essential Responsibilities

You will:

  • Conduct research in an interdisciplinary team involving the design and optimization of new materials and processes.

  • Develop physics-based models of manufacturing processes, materials, and systems.

  • Design and conduct experiments to calibrate and validate these models.

  • Work across organizations, including interfacing with GE businesses, government agencies and universities, to define project objectives and technical approach, and meet project deliverables.

  • Communicate progress internally and externally through oral presentations, internal reports, and as appropriate through external communications including conference presentations and publications, to engineering and leadership teams at GE Research and GE businesses, government agencies and professional societies.

  • Foster an inclusive multidisciplinary team environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline or MS degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline with a minimum of 3 years of related experience.

  • Expertise in the process-microstructure-property relationships and thermo-mechanical behavior of one or more major classes of structural materials (advanced alloys, and/or fiber-reinforced composites)

  • Broad knowledge of material processes (alloy and composite processing, additive manufacturing)

  • Programming skills and experience developing new material and process models.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and in large multidisciplinary teams.

Desired Characteristics

  • Publication and innovation record in manufacturing & material modeling, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, technical books, or issued patents.

  • Experience with commercial material modeling tools (e.g., ANSYS, ABAQUS).

  • Experience with agile software development practices.

  • Knowledge of statistical analysis, data analytics, and/or machine learning methods.

  • Active security clearance and/or the ability to obtain a US security clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship
