General Electric Research Engineer - Coatings - Vernova Research in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

As a Research Engineer - Coatings in GE Vernova Organization you will develop novel materials and coating technologies for a broad range of applications in the Energy Transition technology sector. You will conduct experimental work to develop new coating material systems, select and develop appropriate thermal spray processes to create new structures, and conduct characterization and evaluation of these structures and recommend the solutions.

Roles and Responsibilities:

In this this role you will work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team to:

  • Conduct, define and lead basic and applied research to the selection of materials and thermal spray processes for abradable, low-friction, wear, anti-corrosion, thermal barrier, and environmental barrier coatings.

  • Develop structure – property relationships and test methods that can be implemented to measure critical properties that are indicators of performance.

  • Provide expertise in thermal spray processing condition development and development of thermal spray and surface treatment process technology to serve specific needs of the projects.

  • Identify technology trends in thermal spray processing and long-term technical growth opportunities for coating technologies in support of GE businesses and external customers

  • Be a member of a multidisciplinary team to develop functional coatings across diverse application spaces.

  • Identify and form collaborative relationships with academia, national laboratories, industry, government agencies and GE experts to leverage internal capability, increasing impact.

  • Investigate, identify and pursue external and commercial opportunities, proposing solutions to some of the world’s toughest challenges and write white papers and proposals for grant consideration.

  • Support IP strategy development and prior art analysis, write disclosures and patent applications and collect rigorous experimental data for IP patent processes.

  • Deliver technical results, progress and insights through effective presentations, reports, and publications to GE Research leadership, the GE businesses, government agencies, professional societies, and peer-reviewed journals

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science and Engineering or related field or MS degree in Materials Science and Engineering or related field with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience.

  • Experience in thermal spray processing

  • Demonstrated expertise in materials and coating process development and/or selection of appropriate tests and testing procedures to measure critical coating properties

  • Practical knowledge of safety practices as it relates to experimental design and lab practices.

  • Ability to work independently and in large multi-disciplinary teams

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in cold spray, thermal barrier coatings, environmental barrier coatings, or other protective coatings

  • Very good understanding of thermodynamics, degradation kinetics, phase stability and diffusion in high temperature coating material systems

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Experimental experience in developing metallic materials

  • Experience in writing proposals to government funding agencies

  • Demonstrated excellence in research through peer reviewed publications
