General Electric Research Engineer - Biology & Applied Physics in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

This position will require you to innovate as part of a team to solve challenging problems in electronic systems for physiological monitoring and medical imaging systems. The research and development work will include a variety of medical devices and applications across a range of clinical environments including wearable sensors, electrical impedance tomography, and ultrasound imaging.

Roles and Responsibilities

As a Research Engineer, you will:

  • Actively engage in the research and development of novel wearable sensing systems for physiological and environmental parameters as well as novel medical imaging systems including electrical impedance tomography and ultrasound.

  • Develop low power, flexible, wireless-enabled systems leveraging knowledge of human physiology.

  • Develop prototypes including circuit design, circuit board layout, embedded firmware, and application software.

  • Validate performance of developed solutions through analysis, simulation, test, and measurement.

  • Clearly and professionally communicate progress and results of your research with the team, business leaders, customers and technology providers.

  • Work closely with business stakeholders and project team members to meet project deliverables.

  • Create intellectual property by generating invention disclosures and filing patents.

  • Maintain external visibility through conference presentations and peer-reviewed journal publications.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or related field, or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics or related field with a minimum of 2 years of experience.

  • Demonstrated design and development experience with physiological measurement including signal acquisition, signal processing, and algorithm development.

  • Demonstrated experience developing physiological measurement electronic systems including analog sensors, front end circuitry, embedded microcontroller programming, and printed circuit board design.

  • Demonstrated experience developing and analyzing signal processing and physiological algorithms using Matlab, Python, etc. and implementation of real-time algorithms on microcontrollers using C, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience with test and measurement laboratory equipment and methods to validate electronic subsystem performance including statistical analysis of performance results.

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Characteristics

  • A record of research and development, and experience with physiological measurement systems proven by peer-reviewed conference proceedings, and journal publications.

  • Experience with application of low power, wireless communication (e.g. Bluetooth, MBANs).

  • Proficiency with real-time algorithm implementation using microcontrollers.

  • Experience with design of FPGA-based systems, HDL coding, and verification

  • Experience with Institutional Review Board procedures related to human subject testing.

  • High levels of curiosity, independence, and creativity.

  • Experience writing proposals in response to government solicitations.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, team oriented with “can - do” mindset.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
