General Electric Research Engineer - Additive Manufacturing in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

As part of the Advanced Manufacturing team, you will focus on developing next generation additive equipment and processes to drive the industrialization of additive manufacturing technologies. You will support the adoption and invention of new additive manufacturing modalities and the development of the integrated additive design and manufacturing digital thread.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Apply computational and experimental skills to develop next generation additive manufacturing equipment and processes, focusing on Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM) and Directed Energy Deposition (DED).

  • Work with GE Research and GE business teams to identify additive manufacturing needs and growth opportunities and define machine and process specifications.

  • Generate additive build files and define machine and process parameters to enable additive manufacturing of novel designs, while meeting cost, throughput, and quality targets.

  • Contribute to the development, integration, and testing of critical additive manufacturing sub-systems, including lasers, optics, and on-machine monitoring and instrumentation.

  • Participate in writing external proposals and executing government-funded programs.

  • Participate in the development of technology strategy and implementation of actionable multi-generation technology plans for additive manufacturing.

  • Document and communicate results in reports and presentations to GE business partners and customers.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields with at least 2 years of relevant industrial experience.

  • Hands-on experience in the design, development, and testing of additive DMLM or DED machines and process parameters.

  • Demonstrated experience in the integration of mechanical, electrical, and sensing systems into industrial additive manufacturing machines.

  • Experience in commercial 3D CAD design tools (Autodesk, NX, Solidworks) and build file generation tools (Magics 3D, 3DXpert).

  • Demonstrated experience in software development using languages, such as C#, C++, Python, LabVIEW, and/or MATLAB.

  • Demonstrated ability to independently perform analytical and experimental research work.

  • Excellent team working ability, communication skills, and flexibility. Ability to develop cross-organization partnerships.

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.

Desired Characteristics

  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related fields is a plus

  • Expertise in numerical control, tool path development, and robotic programming.

  • Experience in hardware-software system integration and the design and fabrication of digital and analogue electronics

  • Expertise in signal and image processing algorithms development

  • Experience in writing compelling proposals and executing government-funded programs.

  • A record of publications in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

  • Strong influencing skills with customers, senior leadership, and project teams.
