Job Description Summary
Systems engineering is a cross-functional engineering discipline centered on an approach, mindset, and process. All activities that consider both the business and the technical needs of the customers with the goal of providing a quality product that meets the users needs. The discipline that executes a robust process of design, creation, and optimization of systems, consisting of identification and quantification of system requirements, creation of alternate system design concepts, performance of design trade studies, selection and implementation of the best designs and verification that the design is properly integrated and executed. Process that proceeds from concept to production to operation.
Impacts departmental operations and responsible for planning/execution. The role has some autonomy but is focused on execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. Some judgment may be required but this is typically with guidance.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
Responsible for the theory, design, development and practical implementation of product safety engineering methodologies and techniques for equipment and devices. Execute a process to identify and mitigate safety risks inherent to the product design to an acceptable level; conduct rigorous safety risk assessments, hazard evaluations, utilize human factors principles to drive design improvements in order to eliminate human error in the operation and maintenance of the product in the field
Developing in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline. Uses prior experience and acquired technical expertise to execute policy/strategy.
In-depth understanding of key business drivers; uses this understanding to accomplish own work. In-depth understanding of how work of own team integrates with other teams and contributes to the area.
Uses some level of judgment and has ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters but with guidance. Uses prior experience and on-the-job training to solve straightforward tasks. Lead product safety risk assessments for new and existing (installed base equipment) units, including Safety FMEA, quantitative risk modeling, and Job Hazard Analyses..
Identify and execute hazard mitigation of new / existing designs
Assist root cause analysis for safety related concerns by working with cross-functional teams representing Fleet Support Engineering, Design Engineering, , EHS, Legal, Supplier Quality, Sourcing, and Chief Engineers Office
Drive resolution of safety critical items by documenting investigation details and working with the management and design teams to ensure completion of actions items. Advise the design team in applying safe design practice to assure a tolerable risk level is achieved
Ensure all aspects of product safety are addressed within the constraints of operational effectiveness, time, and cost throughout the product life cycle
Provide thorough documentation of risk assessments (, assumptions, team meetings, and program status in the SAFER database
Lead cross-functional Safety Program Management Teams across the business components to actively drive the execution of the GE Renewable Energy Product Safety process.
Research safety related information on industry-specific equipment and processes
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Safety, Environmental, or Industrial Engineering or similar field from an accredited college or university
Minimum of 3 years relevant engineering experience in a design, systems, field operations, or product safety role
Desired Characteristics
Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs. Established project management skills.
Familiarity with safety related Regulatory Compliance and Occupational Health standards
Diligent record keeping and acute attention to detail for proof-reading and creation / maintenance of permanent safety records
Experience with product safety methods, processes, and tools such as Reliasoft Weibull and RENO.
Battery Energy Storage design or operations experience
Strong technical aptitude, including applicable engineering tools and systems
Demonstrated team building, leadership and interpersonal skills
Ability to perform well, under pressure, as a problem solver
Willingness to challenge previous designs or ongoing processes to ensure adherence to safety compliance
Organizational and documentation skills to keep track of multiple issues and action items to drive to closure
Knowledge of reliability requirements and processes
Cross-functional integration skills
Demonstrated team / project leadership skills to include project planning, and team building
