General Electric Post-Doctoral Engineer - Control Systems - Aviation Research in Niskayuna, New York

Job Description Summary

At GE Research, our team develops advanced control system technology to solve industrial problems to help invent the future of flight, lift people up, and bring them home safely. We are enabling sustainable air travel and the next generation military propulsion systems.

As a Post-Doctoral Control Systems Engineer, you will work independently as well as in a team during a 12-month fellowship at our Niskayuna, NY campus to develop advanced modeling, controls, optimization, estimation, and detection technologies. The technologies you develop will be used in the design, testing, and operation of advanced prototypes and products. This development will involve contributing to projects across GE Aerospace with fellow researchers from a range of technology disciplines.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities: As a Post-Doctoral Control Systems Engineer, you will:

  • Work for 12 months on campus to develop and apply advanced technology solutions to GE Aerospace products and services using advanced modeling, controls, optimization, estimation, and detection technologies.

  • Validate performance of developed solutions through simulations and application on target systems.

  • Document technology and results through patent applications, technical reports, and publications.

  • Stay current with advances in system technologies to seek out new ideas and applications.

  • Work in a team environment with colleagues across GE Research, GE Aerospace, and government agencies.


  • Doctorate degree in an Engineering field with experience in design of advanced modeling, controls, optimization, estimation, and detection technologies.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing systems solutions (algorithm development and software implementation) for complex physical systems (e.g., mechanical systems, power systems, transportation, aviation systems).

  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and C, C++, or Python.

  • Willingness to travel at a minimum of 2 weeks per year.

Ideal Candidate Characteristics:

  • Experience developing advanced controls solutions for industrial applications

  • Experience with real-time implementation of system solutions in a variety of hardware platforms

  • Demonstrated ability to take an innovative idea from a concept to a product

  • Ability to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance

  • Expertise with dynamic system simulation packages, such as NPSS

  • Experience developing cyber-security algorithms

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Experience with program management, which includes setting up schedules, milestones, technical reviews, tracking financials, etc.
