General Electric Post Doc - Control Systems in Niskayuna, New York

Role Summary:

As a Postdoctoral Researcher you will develop models, advanced controls, optimization, estimation, and detection technologies. You will have to work independently as well as in a team to develop systems technology solutions for a variety of GE product applications including turbo-machinery, renewable energy systems, locomotives, and healthcare systems.

Essential Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include working closely with business stakeholders and project team members to meet project deliverables. The employee will need to work independently as well as in a team to develop and deliver solutions in systems technologies including modeling, advanced controls, optimization, estimation, and detection to develop technology differentiation for GE products and services.

As a Controls Systems Engineer, you will:

  • Work independently as well as with a diverse team to develop and apply advanced technology solutions to GE products and services using modeling, advanced controls, optimization, estimation, and detection technologies.

  • Validate performance of developed solution through simulations and application on target product to mature technology to be transferred to the GE business.

  • Document technology and results through patent applications, technical reports, and publications.

  • Stay current with advances in system technologies to seek out new ideas and applications.

  • Work in a team environment with colleagues across GE Global Research and GE business units.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Doctorate degree in an Engineering field with specialization in control system engineering

  • Expertise in at least one or more of the following areas: advanced controls, optimization, estimation, detection algorithms, or cyber-security

  • Knowledge and application of advanced controls, optimization, estimation, or detection algorithms.

  • Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and C, C++, or Python.

  • Willingness to travel at a minimum of 2 weeks per year.

  • Demonstrated experience (algorithm development and software implementation) in developing systems solutions for complex physical systems (e.g. mechanical systems, chemical plants, power systems, transportation, aviation systems).

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. You will need to have valid, on-going authorization to work in the U.S.

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY

  • Must be 18 years or older

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with real-time implementation of system solutions in a variety of hardware platforms.

  • Knowledge of other dynamic system simulation packages, such as Easy5, NPSS, etc.

  • Experience developing controls solutions for industrial applications such as locomotives, wind turbines, oil & gas systems, power plants, healthcare systems, and aerospace systems

  • Experience in developing model predictive control

  • Experience in developing cyber-security algorithms

  • Exposure to industrial control hardware programming and industrial control software development

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Self-motivated and ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Experience with program management which includes setting up schedules, milestones, technical reviews, tracking funding etc.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to establish and transfer control concepts from research to product
