Job Description Summary
Metallurgists are responsible for technical direction and research execution related to work in new alloy design, processing and property optimization, microstructure quantification, root cause analysis for a manufacturing improvement, and metallurgy-based service & repair work. Your primary responsibility in this job will be to provide technical leadership in projects focusing on alloy composition, microstructure, processing and performance relationships. As a Lead Scientist - Metallurgy, you will:
Conduct research in an interdisciplinary team environment involving new alloy design, process optimization, property optimization, root cause analysis for processing and manufacturing improvements, and metallurgy-based service & repair work for a variety of metallic materials systems.
Author program proposals to external agencies that align with GE technology roadmaps and participate in the execution of government contracts.
Work across organizations, including interfacing with external agencies, GE businesses and universities on project definition, technical approach and execution.
Share project progress internally and externally through oral presentations, written reports, and as appropriate through external and internal publications to GE Research, GE businesses, senior leadership teams, government agencies, and professional societies.

Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.
PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 3 years of professional experience or BS degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 7 years of professional experience.
Experience in the advanced characterization (i.e. SEM, TEM, XRD), processing and performance evaluation of structural alloys. Examples include Ni-superalloys, Titanium alloys and Refractory alloy systems
Desire and flexibility to contribute to projects across Metallurgy portfolio, including but not limited Al, Ti, Fe, Ni, Co, and Refractory based material systems.
Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills in a global team environment.
Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.
Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
Due to the nature of the duties of this position, this role requires the individual to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.
Experience in the metallurgy of materials made by additive manufacturing, thermo-mechanical processing and/or powder metallurgy.
Experience in the use of computational materials science toward industrial research and development projects, including the application of machine learning and AI-based tools to materials-focused outcomes.
Strong patent, presentation and publication record.
