General Electric Executive Chief Engineer – Propulsion, Power and Thermodynamic Systems in Niskayuna, New York
Job Description Summary
GE Research is working towards defining the future of Propulsion, Power and Thermodynamic Systems. The primary responsibility of this position is to lead multi-disciplinary teams in partnership with the US Department of Energy and select US Department of Defense agencies to shape research to identify emerging trends and develop disruptive technologies.
Essential Responsibilities :
The Executive Chief Engineer for Propulsion, Power and Thermodynamic Systems will work with engineering and product management teams across Aviation, Gas Power, and GE Hitachi businesses to develop GE positions and technology paths defining the disruptive future of propulsion and power systems, for terrestrial and space applications.
The incumbent will focus on designing next generation system architectures to move beyond the entitlement limits of traditional engines and energy systems, including working with business stakeholders to develop opportunities for integration with airframes and electric power plants.
You will define the future of Propulsion, Power and Thermodynamic Systems by; Providing thought leadership on the future of Gas Turbine & Space Propulsion / Gas Turbine & Nuclear Power Generation Systems, including novel gas and combined gas turbine / nuclear power systems, missile and high-speed / high-altitude propulsion systems, and decarbonization (including utilizing hydrogen fuel) of the aviation and the electric power sectors, in order to influence GE’s product and technology development strategy. Supporting development of plant and vehicle system level techno-economic models and optimization for Propulsion & Power Generation systems, including all aspects of commercial and military applications.
A major part of this role will also involve working with teams across GE Research to identify emerging technologies and trends with the potential to disrupt the current business models in GE’s Propulsion and Power Generation Systems businesses. You will work with key stakeholders in GE Research, GE businesses, external organizations, universities, and the government to; Develop and evaluate system scenarios for the future of Advanced Gas Turbine and Space Propulsion / Advanced Gas Turbine & Nuclear Power Generation Systems, and shape / launch GE Research efforts on early Technology Readiness Level research based on these scenarios.
Coordinate efforts to mature and de-risk novel low TRL technologies and ensure disruptive impacts are incorporated in GE business planning through the long term multi-generational product and technology planning process.
You will lead efforts at GE Research partnering with agencies within the US Departments of Defense and Energy, NASA, Universities, and potential commercial partners to influence and shape government funded research in the Propulsion and Power Generation System spaces to align with GE interests by;
Developing GE Research strategy for shaping and responding to government solicitations related to Advanced Gas Turbine and Space Propulsion/ Advanced Gas and Nuclear Power Generation Systems.
Work with business stakeholders to identify and nurture partnerships with major defense contractors to develop opportunities for future military propulsion (e.g. rotating detonation, scramjet) and space applications.
Driving strategy and bid/no-bid decisions in response to funding opportunities related to Advanced Gas Turbine and Space Propulsion / Advanced Gas and Nuclear Power Generation Systems.
Driving externals proposals for Advanced Gas Turbine and Space Propulsion / Advanced Gas and Nuclear Power Generation Systems and serve as Capture Manager for significant efforts. Leading significant external projects as required.
Identifying and mentoring Principal Investigators for large government programs.
You will be responsible for communicating these cross-organization and cross-business strategies and plans to Senior VP and CEO level leadership across GE, as well as other stakeholders in business, government, and universities.
Doctorate degree in a thermodynamics, aerodynamics, aerospace or a related science engineering field with a minimum of 15 years of experience or similar master’s with a minimum of 20 years of relevant experience
A minimum 10 years of experience leading teams or projects.
Demonstrated deep domain knowledge in the areas of propulsion, thermodynamics, power generation technologies, and system modeling including economic factors.
Proven success in influencing teams to develop novel breakthrough technologies
Demonstrated track-record of influencing and working with government funding agencies
Demonstrated experience at identifying and capturing funding for innovative ideas Experience leading large government research programs and writing successful R&D proposals
Experience leading large, multi-disciplinary research teams, and reporting out to Senior VP and CEO leadership levels.
Experience in working in Global teams Experience in driving new ideas from concept to demonstration
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with demonstrated ability to lead multimillion-dollar programs
Ability to make decisions with confidence when problems or solutions are not well defined
Due to the nature of the duties of this position, this role requires the individual to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.
