The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager has overall responsibility of developing, implementing, and maintaining a robust EHS program at GE Hitachi (GEH) Nuclear Energy facilities in Canada. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a growing team. In this role you will lead the development and promotion of a strong and compliant safety culture for GEH’s growing Ontario team. In partnership with our GEH Canada leaders, you will address general safety questions in a highly engaged culture, perform safety audits, training, policy updates, and provide EHS technical support for GEH projects in Canada.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

As the EHS Manager, you will provide day-to-day leadership and support of EHS activities at our Ontario facility and provide EHS technical support for new projects in Canada. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Energetically initiate and influence integration of EHS policies and practices into the business.

  • Collaborate with individuals from various GEH business units, customers, vendors and regulators, in support of EHS excellence.

  • Actively own implementation of EHS programs and procedures to ensure company compliance.

  • Drive facility readiness for internal and external audits, customer visits and project reviews by managing EHS procedural compliance, training, compliance programs and housekeeping.

  • Ensure non-resident work force and project personnel are trained and following all site practices, work rules and safety procedures.

  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements.

  • Administer and manage the site’s GenSuite EHS compliance tracking programs and record keeping systems. These systems include EHS management systems (Framework 2.0), audits, training documentation, waste management, injury and illness record-keeping, incident investigation, and lead non-conformance analysis.

  • Contribute to the overall business strategy, including involvement in long-term planning and management of complex issues.

  • Participate in and lead event and injury investigations, including Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) and Ontario – Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) Injury and Illness case management with determination of record-ability.

  • Interface with medical case management, worker compensation and occupational medical clinic organizations as required.

  • Assure all regulatory required reports and submittals are filed timely and accurately.

  • Manage the handling and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes in compliance with federal, provincial, municipal and GE requirements. Drive focus on goal of minimizing waste quantities.

  • Maintain appropriate waste profiles for all waste streams via GE Corporate approved vendors.

  • Support, review, revise, and implementation of EHS programs and procedures to ensure federal, provincial, municipal, as well as company compliance. Disciplines include Asbestos, Hazardous Material, Electrical Safety, Crane Lifting/Rigging, Confined Space, Work at Heights, Lockout/Tagout, and Contractor Safety.

  • Provide technical advice and direction on environmental, health, or industrial safety (EHS) challenges for future Canadian projects.

  • Develop and lead training programs for assigned program areas

  • Evaluate facility EHS conditions, assess and audit risks, analyze trends and performance and develop appropriate corrective-action / continuous improvement plans

  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with regulatory agencies

  • Track progress against EHS metrics and goals

  • Work cooperatively with EHS HQ on various projects and initiatives


  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college

  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in a technical, manufacturing, operations, or military role

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an environmental, health, and/or safety discipline.

  • Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in assignments involving regulatory activities

Desired Qualifications / Characteristics

  • Master’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental, or related EHS / Engineering field

  • Strong background in regulatory compliance, preferably in the nuclear industry

  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) or other EHS certification credential

  • Knowledge of federal, provincial, municipal EHS regulations and codes/standards, including familiarity with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 requirements.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively interface at all levels of the organization, as well as organizations outside of GE (regulatory agencies)

  • Experience developing environmental impact studies

  • Experience with case management and Root Cause Analysis (RCA)

  • Strong computer and database skills, including Microsoft Suite.

  • Strong facilitation, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Cross-functional supervisory or project leadership experience.

  • Proven ability to create real and positive change.

  • Lean and/or Six Sigma certification
