General Electric Polymer Engineer in Jacksonville, Florida

Job Description Summary

Engineering professional directly responsible for material and manufacturing process development of polymer materials and related processes used in aerospace and industrial components. This individual provides direct support to the design groups, manufacturing, and suppliers in the areas of materials development and selection, process development and control, improvement, failure analysis, and problem solving.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Plans and conducts material and process development programs to improve performance and producibility of polymer based pottings, adhesives, paints, primer, insulation and dielectrics and their related processes. These include composites of polymers with ceramics, metals etc. to enhance functionality. Site Special Process Owner for these manufacturing activities.

  • Directs verification and performance testing of polymer materials using industry standard ASTM test methods and performance evaluations in products.

  • Assists manufacturing in the identification, installation and development of process parameters for all internal polymer-based product manufacturing equipment. Works with manufacturing to define necessary tooling and fixtures needed for specific part manufacture.

  • Assists in the preparation and review of polymer-based part or potting and associated tool drawings; prepares engineering and process specification; documents results of technical activities in formal technical reports.

  • Directs and assists in root cause problem solving activities conducted to resolve manufacturing and field service performance problems related to polymer materials.

Required Qualifications

  • BS/MS Degree in Polymer/Chemical/Materials Science Engineering from an accredited university or college

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in the design and manufacture of products using polymer materials and related post-processes. Aerospace experience preferable but not necessary.

Desired Characteristics

  • Broad Knowledge of standard polymer based raw materials selection (silicones, epoxies, PTFE etc.), manufacturing processes and material testing. Experience with specifying potting and insulation for electronic components, especially in an aerospace engine environment. Experience with specifying and performing related processes including adhesive bonding, cure schedules, laboratory testing and writing specifications. Common desktop computer tools. Additive experience, broader materials focus also preferred. Familiarization with the operation of DSC, TGA and FT-IR equipment is a plus..Note: To comply with US immigration and other legal requirements, it is necessary to specify the minimum number of years’ experience required for any role based within the USA.
