Job Description Summary

The Principal Engineer is an expert with bearing and bearing systems with an emphasis in hardware design, manufacturing and failure analysis. This role is a part of the Megawatt Constrained Machine Head team and collaborates with design engineers, engineering managers, technical leaders, and other controlled title holders to drive innovative designs, quality hardware, and resolve complex technical issues.

Job Description


  • Develop and drive vision for bearings and bearing systems for the Megawatt Constrained product segment

  • Partner with engineers at multiple levels, engineering leaders, and Chiefs Office to ensure sound design practices, methods, and tools are utilized and continuously improved

  • Introduce new methods, tools, and techniques to improve design, mitigate risk, and optimize performance

  • Own the most complex designs, new technology integration into production, and other mission critical technical activities

  • Identify, quantify, and mitigate technical risk against business risk. Provide recommendations to business and technical leaders

  • Mentor and guide within the bearings technical community on DFMEA, DFR, validation processes, system trade-off studies, analysis, cost modeling, and other items to drive engineering excellence

  • Own and drive resolution of complex RCA’s. Effectively partner across functions (i.e. Sourcing, Fleet Engineers, etc.) to align on root cause, actions, and resolution

  • Influence the tool-chain strategy and drive development of specific tools

  • Guide optimization of MLA and site-specific product application

  • As delegated by Consulting Engineer & Chief Consulting Engineer, provide technical leadership in design reviews, taskforces, industrial committees, and design boards

  • Collaborate across segments and wind turbine platform teams on lesson learned, best practices, etc.

  • Lead specific technical initiatives or imperatives across the global bearing systems communication


  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline

  • Minimum 10 years relevant engineering experience

Desired Characteristics:

  • Application engineering experience where bearing design and selection is considered based on flexible structures.

  • High comfort level, exposure and understanding with reliability engineering and Weibull modelling.

  • Demonstrated experience with various bearing types (cylindrical, tapered, ball, spherical etc)

  • Experience with bearing analysis for transmissions or gearboxes of some type (automotive or industrial)

  • Experience with shaft support systems

  • Demonstrated exposure to failure analysis and problem solving.

  • Deep knowledge of bearing industry standards

  • Prior Wind industry experience

  • Proven leadership (indirect and/or direct) experience. Able to effectively coach, mentor, and guide engineers to resolve complex technical problems and develop quality designs

  • Demonstrated clear thinker – able to solve complex technical challenges and communicate actions/solutions in clear concise manner that drives impact

  • Proven ability to work efficiently without direct supervision. Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to motivate others to achieve results

  • Demonstrated systems thinker – understands dependencies between systems, proven ability to effectively assess trades and make optimized technical decisions

  • Makes decisions and manages conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to take ownership of issues and drive solutions

  • Strong ability to influence others, drive change, and align cross-functional teams to success. Demonstrated ability to influence and lead change

  • Advanced degree from an accredited university or college in an Engineering or related discipline
