Job Description Summary
Reporting to the engineering manager, you will lead composite design, working on a broad range of projects, from new technology and new product introduction, to production and in-service support. The successful candidate will be an experienced composite design engineer, used to working on multiple projects and juggling competing priorities, and will be an existing signatory for design data release and MRB.
Lead projects to develop new propeller blades and other composite structures
Lead teams of engineers from within Dowty and from external partners to deliver projects and design solutions
Support development of new manufacturing methods for composite blades and other composite structures.
Support productionisation of composite structures, from early prototyping to introduction to series manufacture. Contribute to manufacturing readiness and design for manufacturing assessments.
Introduce mods and amendments in support of in-service requests, ongoing production and repair operations
Support production with daily collaboration with the manufacturing organisation, and develop close relationships within the engineering and operations communities
Contribute to engineering estimating and manage assigned work packages
Identify and implement continuous improvement on the shop floor
Trouble-shoot customer and repair shop issues. Support repair concession and MRB, work towards concessions signatory for composite parts
Work towards drawing approver status
Contribute strongly to overall development of mechanical design function, in particular the composites design community. Lead and mentor other staff and trainees
Identify and promote use of composite design best practice. Assist with continuous improvement of composite design methods and tools, Dowty technical instructions and design procedures
BSc in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or equivalent
A high level of relevant experience of composite design in high integrity / safety critical industry
Extensive experience of design for manufacture, ideally in resin transfer molded products, and a good appreciation of composite tooling requirements
Existing certification for drawing and CAD approvals
Existing certification for MRB review and sign-off
Experience of composite products repair processes and repair concession sign-off
Experienced Catia user, particularly regarding composite design and design for manufacture
Experience of design of rotating machinery
Experience of development of new composite manufacturing processes
Experience of Windchill
