GE Aerospace Senior Staff Engineer – Thermal Systems (m/f/d) - remote option in Garching, Germany

Job Description Summary

The Senior Staff Engineer for Thermal Systems Design will be a recognized subject matter expert and technical leader in advancing the state of the art for thermal systems designs. In this role, you will work within commercial aero engine development programs and externally funded research programs. You will conduct analyses and tests, with limited guidance, to define and optimize thermal fluid systems using heat transfer and fluid mechanics analysis tools, rig testing, and ultimately engine testing. You will provide technical leadership, strategic direction, and mentor technical teams of engineers supporting advanced aero engine technology efforts like the RISE Open Fan program. Areas of focus include heat exchangers (component and sub-component design and testing), secondary flows applied research and sub-component development (e.g. seals and offtakes), and system thermal management (supporting GE Aerospace’s technology maturation efforts, including hybrid-electric and/or hydrogen applications).

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • As part of GE Aerospace's RISE program, lead the design, testing, and analysis of components needed for the engine’s thermal system, including heat exchangers and secondary air flow architectures and sub-component development, specifically in the context of the Open Fan technology maturation and demonstration programs.

  • Provide technical, horizontal team, and program leadership on complex program issues related to thermal systems design. Serve as a consultant for engineers ranging from entry-level to experienced senior professionals in the global Thermal Systems Design section.

  • Manage resources assigned to the project, prioritize activities to deliver program objectives on time, while meeting cost and quality requirements.

  • Execute and independently guide the analysis, design, test, and integration of assigned components or systems to meet product requirements and business standards.

  • Represent the Thermal Systems Design team in the coordination with other technical disciplines, with understanding of engine integration at the system level.

  • Manage and drive research and technology activities targeting next-generation applications, including planning of external funding proposals.

  • Prepare, present, and/or review technical data with internal and external customers, as well as engineering leadership.

  • Driven problem solving and innovation initiatives. Explain complex concepts in clear and concise manner to engineering leadership and individual contributors at all levels.

  • Apply lean tools and develop lean processes to improve organizational productivity and efficiency.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent knowledge and experience.

  • Fundamental industrial experience in thermal system designs, particularly in thermal management technologies for Aviation applications.

  • Strong understanding of the physics and principles associated with thermal systems and turbomachinery design.

  • Proven track record in delivering on complex programs.

  • Inclusive and comfortable working in multi-disciplinary global teams, in multi-cultural environments.

  • Proven ability to create and execute strategic vision for technology and product advancement.

  • Fluency in English.

Desired Characteristics

  • Doctorate Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or relevant field.

  • Hands-on experience in thermal management, multi-phase fluids, computational fluid dynamics for thermal systems design.

  • Experience in scale and full-scale testing, including test planning, instrumentation, test execution, and data analysis.

  • Self-directed, highly motivated, able to manage work-load across several activities.

  • Quick learner, flexible attitude, exceptional communication skills.

  • Inclusive and comfortable working in multi-disciplinary global teams.

  • Keen listener, proven facilitation and collaboration skills.

  • Passion for technical excellence and technology advancement.

  • German language.
