General Electric Lead Engineer - Mining Wheelmotor Systems in Frankfort, Kentucky

Role Summary:

The Lead Engineer - Mining Wheelmotor Systems will have overall responsibility for off-highway mining vehicle electromechanical wheel motor design. Coordinates with customers, subsystems, operations, supply chain, quality, service, and the field to produce successful wheelmotor solutions for current product and new product programs.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overall mining systems wheel motor design, supply chain interface, customer and service interfaces, validation testing and other items as directed.

  • Interfaces directly with customer regarding application requirements.

  • Coordinates any customer field testing required to verify and validate design.

  • Coordinates with lead systems engineers and customers as needed to document and communicate application requirements to the structural engineers, gear engineers, production, supplier, and test resources to ensure gear unit and wheel motor design meets all requirements.

  • Participates in field service manual development, constructs parts bulletins. Interfaces with Product Definition and Technical Publications personnel to ensure construction of high quality manuals.

  • Leads the validation and HALT testing efforts from conception to execution of tests and disposition of material.

  • Leads failure analysis and issue resolution within the overall gear unit and wheel motor.

  • Directs equipment assembly and / or disassembly, documenting remarkable findings according to business needs.

  • Provides guidance to less experienced engineers to enable project execution on time and within specification.

  • Collates information from cross-functional teams and communicates essential business information (technical design reviews, budgetary estimations, feasibility studies, field reliability exposure) to management, senior engineers, customers, as required, utilizing approved business processes.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in an engineering, physics, or computer science discipline.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a heavy mechanical equipment design environment.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master of Science degree in mechanical or electrical engineering.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience with GE Transportation mining, locomotive or wind turbine type gear unit design and test methods.

  • Demonstrated experience utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques such as Additive Manufacturing.

  • Member, or alternatively active involvement within a member company, of IEEE or other applicable electromechanical machine industry groups.
