Impacts departmental operations and responsible for planning/execution. The role has some autonomy but is focused on execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. Some judgment may be required but this is typically with guidance.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop/maintain new/existing complex and difficult PCB boards (gate drivers for power semiconductors, analogue and digital process boards, FPGAs and memory circuit boards) which require extensive skill and knowledge of High Voltage Power Electronic equipment capabilities, applications and design limitations that meet the qualification and certification requirements.

  • Investigative and support troubleshooting by providing considerable judgement on existing PCB board design and layout.

  • Define new PCB stack-ups, layout components and routing for complex HF and mixed signals boards.

  • Create PCB simulation models for functional analysis and design.

  • Create and maintain the PCB board BOM while working with GE supply chain and PCBA vendors to produce qualified, non-obsolete, manufacturable, and cost-effective designs and improve the PCB design constraints and rules, EMC good practices, qualification test procedures and manufacturability.

  • Maintain component library, symbols, and footprint as per the datasheets in a well-organized manner.

  • Responsible for scheduling, creating, testing, and verifying completed work from prototype to mass production.

  • Maintaining all design documentation for PCBs and subassembly technical solutions (analogue & digital signal processing boards, low voltage power supply units, digital / analogue / wireless communication boards etc.), BOMs, and CAM files.

  • Ensure power electronic system design comply with the relevant health & safety, international standards, and class society rules.

  • Develop design practices.

  • Follow current off the shell industry technologies on PCB design and disseminate into the team and products. Stay up to date on the last Research and Literature on PCB design and new tools; analyze and evaluate the maturity, risks, benefits, cost impact of including them into the designs.

  • Train and/or sensitize other designers in the best computer techniques, best tools and reference books, in applicable standards and symbols, nomenclature.

  • Support on-time delivery, cost and quality targets on projects.

  • Have deep domain knowledge of semiconductor devices (Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs, GTOs, IGCT, MOSFETS, SiC, GaN, etc.) and their application to large power converters, including cooling, losses, switching characteristics and implications.


  • Must be US Citizen with ability to obtain DOD Personal Security Clearance up to SECRET level.

  • Bachelors degree in engineering from an accredited university.

  • 6+ Years’ experience in power electronics, power conversion, and/or naval power systems

  • 5 years of PCB design and documentation experience or equivalent experience and/or any relevant education.

  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Desired Characteristics

  • Masters/PHD from accredited university

  • Knowledge of industry standards and Compliance Regulatory listings (UL, CSA, ABS etc.), IPC, CID, CID+ certifications for PWB design.

  • High skills in design and layout using industry standards and good DFX (design for manufacturability and test) standards.

  • Digital circuit design

  • Design of microprocessor, FPGA and memory circuits

  • Design of SOC (system on chip) circuits, including some appreciation of configuration and software.

  • A variety of component packaging types, surface mount, BGA, QFP etc.

  • PCB design tools such as Ansys, Allegro, Cadence, Schematic capture, Dxdesigner, ModelSim, Altium, UVM Techniques ,Orcad, Mentor Graphics, PSPICE CAD Star…

  • Embedded software design. HDL (hardware description language) in particular VHDL.

  • Power electronics – Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs, GTOs, IGCT, MOSFETS, SiC, GaN devices.

  • LV and HV (perhaps up to 10kV) insulation, isolation and screening.
