General Electric Preliminary Design Engineer – Product Cost in Evendale, Ohio

Job Description Summary

The Preliminary Design Engineer – Product Cost supports multiple aspects of preliminary engine design, including turbomachinery and external systems cost estimation, design trades, and supply chain engagement. The Preliminary Design Engineer will work with the design team to develop innovative design concepts, simultaneously meeting aggressive cost and performance targets for key next generation engine applications. This role will focus on supporting advanced commercial programs, where you will help guide, influence, and drive change in architecture choices and technology investments.

Job Description

In the role of Preliminary Design Engineer your responsibilities will include:

  • Be a member of a cross-functional team of adjacent disciplines (Aerothermal, Mechanical, Manufacturing, and Services) to drive optimal engine design & cost to meet technical and business objectives

  • Support the cross-section development for preliminary design architecture studies by providing cost assessments for designs and trades being considered

  • Work with supply chain to understand cost and risks for new technology

  • Support cost reviews / audits as required for customer commitments and design space studies

  • Support the development of tools and methods to estimate product cost

  • Execute with guidance the analysis / evaluation of assigned projects that meet business standards, practices and procedures and the product / program requirements

  • Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments

  • Develop action plans to anticipate and respond to problems

  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and / or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures


  • · Bachelor of Science in Engineering an accredited University or College

Desired Characteristics

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a mechanical engineering, supply chain, sourcing, or manufacturing operations position

  • Experience estimating weight, cost, and design parameters early in engine development programs

  • Experience with Unigraphics NX

  • Prior experience working in cross-functional teams

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills

  • Ability to guide and influence others

  • Demonstrated process orientation in approach to work

  • Systems thinking
