Job Description Summary

The external configurations mechanical design engineer will design, analyze, and own all of the fuel and oil lines, air bypass tubes and ducts, and attachment brackets on the outside of a jet engine to ensure proper engine operation installed in an airframe or to integrate the engine to a test cell. Additionally, this

engineer will be part of a team of mechanical design engineers designing new metallic commercial derivative exhaust systems including nozzles and center bodies.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, and own all of the fuel and oil lines, air bypass tubes and ducts, and attachment brackets on the outside of a jet engine to ensure proper engine operation installed in an airframe, integration of the engine into a test cell, or component/module level testing.

  • Design, analyze, and contribute to new metallic exhaust systems. This role is specifically intended to be part of our CF34-10 exhaust design team that will power the US Air Force’s B-52 with a planned first engine to test in 2023, enabling the B-52 to remain in service until the 2050’s.

  • Responsibilities could also include exhaust design on the Affinity exhaust team which will power the Aerion AS2 supersonic business jet.

  • Common exhaust analyses include structural, flange, modal, and thermal growth.

  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product program requirements.

  • Participate in formulating and implementing plans to achieve technical and program requirements, schedules and contract commitment.

  • Participate in, and lead technical reviews.

  • Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments as appropriate.

  • Document technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.

  • Work with supply chain, manufacturing shops, and suppliers to proactively select producible designs and provide evaluations of and abatement plans for manufacturing issues as they arise to ensure timely delivery of hardware that meets design requirements.

  • Evaluate and select test instrumentation and work with instrumentation group to ensure proper measurement ability is achieved on test hardware.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science (or a high school diploma / GED with at least 6 years of IT, engineering, scientific or other technical experience).

  • At least 3 additional years of experience in an engineering position.

  • Existing US government security clearance, or ability to obtain one.

Desired Characteristics

  • Existing ANSYS/FEA modeling and analysis capabilities for mechanical design of intended components or similar hardware.

  • Prior design responsibilities and hardware ownership of intended components or similar hardware.

  • Self-starter exhibiting professionalism, a team oriented mindset, and with initiative to spare.

  • Someone who will thoroughly apply themselves and exhibit ownership of theirresponsibilities.

  • Someone who is adaptable and can operate meaningfully in a team environment.

  • Highly-motivated, passionate, with exceptional communication skills.

  • Established project management skills for themselves and small teams.
