General Electric Systems Engineer in Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Job Description Summary
Known internally as a Lead Systems Engineer, this a great opportunity to join our Aviation Power business. As a Lead Engineer in our Systems and Software team, you will be responsible for the Systems Engineering in developing safety-critical software for large-scale, complex, aircraft electrical power distribution systems. You will enjoy looking at the bigger-picture Systems view and in working across different engineering domains, bring together mechanical, hardware and software designs, as well as considering safety, reliability and production aspects. You will have experience of Systems development including verification (are the requirements met?) & validation (are the requirements correct?) and have a balance of desk work versus test rig work. You will thrive on solving technical problems.
You will be joining an inclusive and diverse team of experienced technical systems and software engineers who care about creating the right solution. We are committed to continuous improvement and sharing technical knowledge and lessons learnt. We are passionate about development, growth and continuous learning.
If this sounds like an environment in which you would thrive, then this could be the next role for you.
The Role / Essential Responsibilities
As a Systems Engineer in the Power Systems and Software Department, you would be helping manage the requirements and interfaces (including associated validation); creating initial design baselines to enable Software, Hardware and Test teams to complete their activities. Effective change management and support to project leadership is essential.
You will use your experience of the full design-to-release lifecycle to support all aspects of Systems Engineering, from creating high-quality requirements and design, to systems verification activities. This could include helping de-bug software via systems test results analysis, or performing hands-on testing, continually improving your knowledge of test equipment, and processes for working safely in both aviation and high-power environments.
You will have the opportunity to move projects and roles to provide variety and grow your responsibility as your experience increases.
Qualifications / Requirements
Previous experience in an aviation, automotive or similar embedded systems development environment working to rigorous standards such as ARP4754A, will confirm your experience of working with complex system designs, for implementation in hardware and software.
An appropriate degree or HND in Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Physics or similar subject, or equivalent experience, shows a logical mindset, alongside good problem solving and solution building skills.
Experience of the systems design lifecycle will help you in activities such as capturing, understanding, and documenting the customer’s system requirements. Strong understanding of what makes a good requirement and how this impacts requirements validation to ensure correctness is important. Good appreciation of baseline management is essential. Knowledge of verification strategies will aid in creating, updating, and performing manual and script-based systems tests.
Your existing experience will allow you to contribute to defining or modifying power distribution systems architectures in co-operation with technical leads and with aircraft manufacturers.
Working in a team-based industry, good written and verbal communication skills will maximise your effectiveness. You may participate in technical and programme reviews for colleagues, leadership, or the end customer. A positive attitude, initiative, pro-activeness and an enthusiasm and passion for Systems Engineering will help you succeed in the department.
If you share our goal as a team: to demonstrate success in achieving and exceeding customer expectations, then apply now!
