General Electric Lead Software Engineer - Test Systems in Cheltenham, United Kingdom

Job Description Summary

Are you a Software Engineer who likes tinkering with Electronics? or, an Electronics Engineer who likes to do coding? Then this hybrid role would be perfect.

An opportunity has arisen for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Test Equipment group. We are Software Engineers, but our purpose is to write code to drive Test Equipment hardware in a safe and efficient way. For debugging and fault finding you may, as well as walking through the code, have to get out a DMM or oscilloscope, also checking out the schematics.

This is a full lifecycle role, from requirements to running verification tests and releasing software products. Test Equipment software for Aviation product is a well-controlled software process and so a certain amount of value-added documentation will need to be produced as part of this role.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the full software life cycle - from initial requirements through to formal release and support

  • Execute the requirements, design, implementation and verification of assigned software using sound engineering principles while adhering to business standards, practices, procedures and product / programme requirements

  • Act as an engineering interface to the Project Manager, clearly articulating the technical direction and decisions

  • Keep track and update technical aspects project planning and performance metrics

  • Support and guide outsource of software solutions.

  • Liaise and interface with other functions, e.g. Systems, Hardware, Programmes, Manufacturing, Sustainment, and other stakeholders

  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned Test Systems and/or tasks inline with engineering policies and procedures

  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews

  • Provide technical guidance and leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project

  • Help coaching, mentoring and training less experienced engineers

  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments

  • Participate on teams assigned to address organisational initiatives and engineering issues

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in a relevant subject or equivalent knowledge and experience

  • Experience of software design, development, and hardware/software integration ideally gained in a high integrity environment

  • Experience of programming using C++ Experience of working with electronics, using oscilloscopes, DMMs etc.

  • Good problem solving and solution building skills

  • Excellent communication skills to team, peers and all levels of management

  • Experience of working with Supplier on fixed price contracts

  • Demonstrated ability for independent and sound technical judgment, identification of problems and formulating solutions.

  • Demonstrable success in achieving and exceeding internal customer milestones

  • Ability to deliver solutions on-time, to budget and with the required quality

  • Experience of programming using design patterns in C++ Positive attitude, initiative, pro-activeness and an enthusiasm and passion

  • Experience of leading/supervising engineers
