Job Description Summary

This Sub-Section Manager role will lead the UK Certification team to bring to market the next generation of industry leading products by leveraging their experience to develop and execute innovative project certification strategies. In this role you will have the opportunity to advance the state of the art in certification by influencing regulations and industry guidance, developing global certification processes, and accommodating the latest development methodologies and technologies. The Sub-Section Manager will demonstrate accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. In this role you will integrate and develop processes that meet business needs across the organization, manage complex issues, be involved in long-term planning, and contribute to the overall business strategy.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, technical direction, and day-to-day management (9 Team members)

  • Serve as the main point of contact with National Aviation Authorities (CAA, EASA, MAA) for all new product development projects

  • Maintain broad awareness of efforts within group to assure technical quality excellence, timely completion of work and reviews, appropriate use of resources, and responsiveness to customer / program needs

  • Serve as Member of Chief Engineer’s Office and Cheltenham site Extended Leadership Team, ensuring/enabling effective business communication across functional teams

  • Participate in Failure, Malfunctions and Defects reporting, investigation and notification process (Aviation Safety Program Management Team (SPMT))

  • Proactive member of the Process Improvement Working Group (PIWG), implementing process improvement initiatives to meet business lean objectives

  • Support to AS/EN 9100 compliance substantiation and associated BSI audits

  • Provide strategic technical leadership for Certification on key technical acquisitions and development programs

  • Provide Bid & Proposal inputs for Certification team

  • Meet sub-section milestones and productivity targets, within allocated budget

  • Manage department budget and provide regular status reporting

  • Communicate with management on technical, organisational, resource and personnel management

  • Conduct performance appraisal, goal/objectives setting and salary planning cycles

  • Work with assigned staff on setting of goals and objectives

  • Work with global Certification teams on strategic improvement initiatives

  • Promote professional growth through timely performance feedback, coaching and mentoring

  • Coordinate for internal Certification training opportunities to meet engineering demands across the Systems portfolio. Work with technical leadership to highlight the value of Certification training and resulting improvement in engineering execution

  • Ensure company compliance initiatives and training requirements are implemented within work group

Qualification Requirements

  • An appropriate degree or HND in Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Physics, similar subject, or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of 10 years as performing certification activities of ED-12C/DO-178C, AMC 20-152A/DO-254, and/or ED-79/ARP 4754A in an aviation engineering environment

  • At least 8 years of experience in a technical or people leadership role within an engineering environment
